Alrighty, Thanks in advance for any tips received.

a guildy of mine had some questions about gemming and enchanting his tanking gear.
I was wondering if anytanks could take a look at him and tell me what they think.

Any tips about gear/gems/enchant/spec/anything are very much welcome.

And for resorces to gear up. at the moment we are only able to do kara and some heroic 5 mans. also some crafting stuff may be available.

well here is his armory profile. thanks for the tips again.

Luckily gemming a tank is pretty easy. Stamina across the board, that's it. Enchanting is also easy. Stamina across the board for enchants done by an ehcanter. The KoT Glyph for the head, and the aldor/scryer enchant for the shoulders. Clefthide / Nethercleft for the legs.

Armory isn't working for me atm so I can't see his current setup, but that's the basic formula.

I'd also suggest the 2% threat to gloves.

I'd comment on other things, but armoury's giving me the finger.

I think your friend is basically in good shape.

Personally, I like going for the gem bonuses but I know I am in the minority on that. More stamina is good though and unless the gem bonus is a really good one, stacking +12 stamina gems never hurts.

I'm a bit jealous of your friend's hit rating as having a high one means that your threat-generating abilities hit more and your taunts get resisted less.

There are a few other good upgrades out of Kara that your friend will probably get eventually. If one upgrade seems overly stubborn, the badge gear is great for filling in those spots. He's actually ahead of me on Kara gear with 5 nice tanking pieces compared to my 3. LoL

What type of questions was your friend asking you? Was he concerned with his health or his threat generation? Knowing where he feels he is lacking could help us be more specific in finding suggestions to help in the area he wants help in.

Balancing stats for a tank is a bit trickier than some classes where you just stack up one stat over all others. To tank you need to have the HP and mitigation to survive longer but you must also have the ability to generate threat to counter the threat of your dps crew and healers. Having the ability to survive awesome amounts of damage doesn't help if you can't keep the mob on you or if the DPS have to hold back so much that the boss hits his enrage timer. Being able to generate huge amounts of threat is great and will make for shorter fights (if your dps crew is good) but that won't do much good if you still die before the fight is over.

Armory finally pulled up for me, and IMO the gem choices are not good at all. I guess people have different views on this, but your friend has only 12k HP unbuffed. He's obviously going out of his way to gem for the socket bonuses, but in doing so he lost over 500 HP, and that's if everything is gemmed with +9 Stamina gems. If +12 stam gems are placed instead, he could easily bump his HP by 800-1k. The socket bonuses combined add up to a measly +4 hit, +8 dodge, +4 defense, +4 block, and +3 parry, which combined is probably less than 1% total avoidance. And Hit Rating isn't gonna be that much of a utility unless he's doing ZA or SSC, which I guess he isn't in that setup. Even something like Nightbane I think would be extremely hard to tank with that low of HP. Even with 14.5k HP unbuffed and 33% dodge/parry combined Nightbane still hits me for 5k sometimes, and crush / cleave for 8k. You need to have some buffer, because if you rely on avoidance it's like playing russian roulette. Eventually the bullet is gonna be in the barrel, and you're going down. That extra 1k HP will go a LONG way towards making the difference between being able to tank some heroics and some of Karazhan to being able to tank every heroic and all of Karazhan.

Just my .02

BTW, he also has a +8 Resilience gem. That's just a huge no-no, any way you slice it. Resilience is terrible for a tank.

As for Enchants:

- Replace the head enchant with Glyph of the Defender
- Replace chest enchant with +150 Health
- Replace bracer enchant with +9 Stamina (+12 Stamina if you're rich)
- Replace glove enchant with Heavy Knothide Armor Kit

Add all that up in addition to the above suggestions and your friend will be pumping about 14.5k HP unbuffed, and TBH he'd probably be in a position to OT in SSC at that point.

Armoury's working for me, now, too, so I'll add a bit in as well. First off, enchants:

-Head: should be the tanking one from KoT (Revered)
-Gloves: Strength enchants, currently, are almost useless to a tank. Either get the armour kit for more HP, or the 2% threat (my recommendation, as it scales extremely well and it means that your DPS don't have to lay off as much)
-Chest: +6 stats isn't all that bad, and he can keep that, but I would rate +150 HP as better
-Bracers: Same thing with the stats, but stam is better.

Gems:

Generally speaking, a prot warrior should default to +12 stam gems. The exceptions to this are if you need to to replace a few gems to make sure you have 490 defence, or you need another kind of gem for a meta (such as the +defence/+10% block value meta that'll come with 2.4... want...).

It is okay to try and get the socket bonus, but only if it is worth it. For instance... his boots, belt, gloves, bracers, shoulders, helm, and his chest to a lesser extent are all bonus not worth gemming for as a tank.

Generally speaking, with socket bonuses you don't want to be giving up too much stam (ie, only 3-6 for a socket bonus), and the bonus has to be good for the trade off.

An example of this would be the khorium destroyer (+27 stam, yellow socket, socket bonus of +3 stam). The trick with that one is that the socket bonus isn't actually stam, but rather the second stat on the gem that you'll use. You can toss in, for example, a +4 defence rating/+6 stam gem. This gets you +9 stam and +4 defence rating. Or if you need to get more threat, the +8hit rating gem works as well.
