Pally seeking adviceFollow

#1 Feb 20 2008 at 10:44 PM Rating: Decent
Hello all, I am a long time lurker, first time poster. I will start with saying thanks to all that post here as this forum has been more than helpful thusfar. So, with that said I will delve into my problem. My main is currently a lvl 61 Prot pally. I have hit that wall where my damage output seems to be almost nil. I am finding it very frustrating when trying to quest in outland when I wind up looking at every battle as a life and death situation. I can do OK if I pull multiple melee mobs as one would expect, but other than that, life as a pally is getting difficult. And what finally drove me to this post was watching a guild mate of mine who is a 60 Holy Priest decimate enemies while I sit back and scratch them to death.

So, where do I go from here, what changes do I need to make. Respeccing to Ret is not really a good option due to the fact that I am the guilds resident tank. That is a role that I am good at. :) I have attempted to regear to the best of my ability, and budget and it does seem to help. But I need a little advice. I miss the days where solo questing was a blast and I felt unstoppable as a pally. Below is my Armory link. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Well, you're 61 - where's your Outlands gear?

Seriously I think gear may be part of the issue. Sure as prot you're not going to kill anything fast, but it shouldn't be life or death.

I don't know about horde-side, but alliance had an awesome chest with some nice spell dmg on it. You look like you're sort of gearing for ret without actually being ret. Your soloing set early on in Outlands will likely be +spell dmg gear. Some of it you'll also use for tanking, but until 70 I had a set that had ~500 spell dmg (stats at 70 was something like 9k health, 8k mana in my soloing set and I generally did fine with that)

So get your outlands gear, ditch the strength stuff, get a soling set and it will go much smoother. You're never going to burn things down like the priest but you'll do OK. It's going to be a little painful to get it though.

Good luck!

edit: and for god's sake don't BUY the gear! It grows on trees in hellfire! Just go quest there!

Well, on alliance you might need to buy a one-hander. The sword that you get from the early quests in hellfire has a speed of 2.7, which is absolutely horrid for a prot pally. I haven't really played my paladin in a month or so, and she's stuck at 60, so I'm not sure what other one-handers are out there as quest rewards for pallys, but I don't recall seeing any with my shaman (though I obviously wasn't paying attention to swords on my shaman, and wanted slow weapons.)

Hello again, thanks for the replies. As far as gear goes I am slowly trying to regear. I had purchased a full set of Ret gear as I thought that would have helped. But, after one run of Scholo I went back to Prot. and returned back to my old gear. I have been replacing most of the gear, trying to focus on spell damage, STA and INT in that order. This is seeming to make a difference. Yes I did purchase some of it, but part has also been quest rewards. I ran a few quests this morning and it seemed to go better. Tomorrow will be a full day of WoW and I will update on how it all works out. I would stil love to hear more suggestions. I am very interested in others ideas for a weapon. I like swords, but at the moment it seems that maces seem to be the way to go for the stats. Thanks again and I look forward to your replies.

The mace your using now is fine. But keep an eye out for a good DPS 1-hander from quests (you will see enough of them), or drops from dungeon runs. Unless you can get a 1-hander with godly +spell damage, for soloing generaly the more damage and faster the better. That works best for me @ Lv70.

For tanking I use: Gladiator's Gavel with +40 spell damage enchant.

For soloing this kills faster: Blackout Truncheon with the cheapest gems I could muster to get the bonus.

Basically, my primary is tanking, so I dumped a ton of time into that with decent gold (just for the weapon). Where "for me" soloing is second on my list, so I picked up a weapon that I never knew exsisted... just happened to drop on a SL run and no one wanted it. But it still kills faster than the GG because it's primarily a DPS weapon (dual wielders would love it im sure).

Now that's just the weapon! definitely go for (as Celcio mentioned above) a mix of +spell damage, stam & int. Just go for the quest rewards... they will define exactly what you will want as a Prot or Holy pally. Ret is different, as Ret +spell damage will be next to useless for you.

Build up 2 sets, one for soloing ...one for Tanking. These don't have to be extensive. A few pieces to boost your stamina here-n-there for tanking, with a weapon for tanking and a few pieces to boost you mana/damage here-n-there for soloing. Depending on what you will do more of, maybe look into spending gold to improve THAT part of your game play, using things you pick up on through out your playtime for the other. Don't spend a ton of gold buying gear (as Celcio also mentioned) because you will replace it very quickly... I've already replaced gear I bought that same day -.- (learned my lesson).

AND!!! get used to killing slow -.- you will not get around that as a prot pally. But you should also not have a problem with survivability.

Hope that helps.

Personally... I found levelling as a prot paladin in TBC to be painfully slow. I would suggest either levelling exclusively in instances, or respeccing to ret to quest with.

Good luck!

I found that the gear that best suited my needs were the "Champion" line. I ejnoy having the added defense that this gear brings. I know that it is not strong in Stanima but I bought some knothide armor that gave +10 stanima for 5 gold each, along w/ the heavier one for the pants for 35gold it gave +30 stanima and +10 agility. Not cheap I know but well worth the investment IMO.

I am sure that you would be worried about your mana pool and I can understand that, but I hardly run out of mana, I am at lvl 68 now and only have 4900 mana as a prot pally. If I make an instance run my healer will keep me w/ enough mana, so long as I dont spam Consecration rank 5 all over the palce. I tend to use rank 1 for Consecration more often than not. I would also make sure that your weapon speed is not too slow. (1.6 - 2.2)

I have the same problem with that, however I just put on BoW and activate my seal of wisdom and judge with that, then I can just keep spamming consecrate if I need to, or I can save my mana for heals, which lets me kill 2 elites of my level with only a few problems.

Just in case your curious, here's my build. http://armory.worldofwarcraft.com/character-talents.xml?r=Dark+Iron&n=Karnofall
