So I was browsing the o-boards the other day, and I came up with this:

with

*spellsurge enchant, and the
*chance to restore mana Meta gem...

you will regen 1 more mana than is needed to maintain a full rotation of Mindflays between putting up VT, VE, and SW:P... thats a 1min rotation...

so if you have 1107dmg, the chance to restore mana on spellcast meta gem, thre Spellsurge enchant, and the Mark of Defiance trinket... mathematically speaking... you will actually regen 1 more mana than is needed to maintain a mindflay rotation for an unlimited amount of time...

what this allows is for you to spec heavily into Shadow for Imp MB, and Shadowpower, using MB and SWD every time they are up... allowing for a huge increase in DPS, and only a slight increase in Mana inefficiency... you can basically spam as hard as you want, and will only need to Pot 1 or 2 times for most encounters...

to reach the free spell point, which means, you regen more mana than is needed to maintain even a full spam rotation including MB and SWD, you must have those 3 items, and hit 1688 +dmg... meaing you will basically be refilling your mana bar to full, even as you spam your hardest ;P

I googled that, and the more I saw, the more it intrigued me. I was wondering, as a raiding spriest, is this possible? I'm no good with mathcraft (it tends to hit crushing blows on me), so can somebody provide the numbers to back this up? I'd like to know if I should take spellsurge or soulfrost, taking into mind that the spellsurge tooltip lies (it's actually a 15% proc chance with a 50s hidden cooldown).

Maintaining a net gain with just DoTs and Flay isn't very difficult at all. Hell, I've been under 800 mana for a full minute before when things go badly (shadowfiend getting killed immediately -_-). In my typical gear and group setup (shammy, BoW, 1192dmg unbuffed, 50% ISB uptime, about 160mp5 fully buffed) I'm sitting at infinite mana using everything but Blast. With Blast and pots, it's 40 minutes - not infinite, but damn well the same thing.

Once priests start getting T6, the damage bonuses that go along with that, and the regen, you get to the point where you don't even have to drink pots to have enough mana to be infinite for all practical purposes; oom times longer than any encounter save maybe Illidan, even when you cut your last tick off Flay in order to get off your other, higher-damage spells.

EDIT: As for spellsurge, if you're going to take the enchant, put it on a "trash" weapon - one that's decent, but not your best (I'd use Mindblade, for example, instead of my normal S2 dagger). Get a mod that times internal cooldowns on items, and then switch weapons and have spellsurge out ONLY when it can proc. When it's on cooldown, use your best weapon with Soulfrost.

Proper mathcrafters have gone into more depth on spellsurge than me but the bottom line is essentially the same, you should take soulfrost. It provides more benefit to your group while the net benefit to you is approximately the same. That said many of our healers take spellsurge, having reached a point in the game where their +healing stat doesn't really need much more work. More often than not I'll be powering a healing group with multiple spellsurges in it, or a dps group with a resto shaman in it. At T5 content/gear and above you can keep up a full DOT/Blast/Flay rotation for every fight with the notable exception of illidari council which is very very long.

So yeah, take soulfrost, not spellsurge, it benefits your group more.
