Scorch stacking in 25Follow

#1 Feb 20 2008 at 12:08 PM Rating: Decent
How imperative is it for scorch to be stacked in a 25-man raid (against harder trash and/or boss), vs. just spamming fireball for more overall damage?

Yeah, I know that "+15% applies to all fire types so it benefits the raid," etc, etc, I'm just talking about mages specifically. If I spam 50 fireballs, as opposed to rotating in a scorch stack, is that more or less damage overall?

Hmm... maybe I just answered my own question... anyways, thoughts?

I have heard it does make a big difference, but I have only been fire spec for all of 3 days and last night was my first raid as fire. I had a hard time remembering to stack the scorches, but I am still getting used to my new red buttons and resisting the urge to push the frostbolt one...

I am curious to find this out as well.

vs trash... I was using scorch anyways because stuff dies too fast (before 2 fireball casts)...

On raid bosses, it's a HUGE amount of damage. 15% for you, every fire mage, every warlock immolulation, fire wands, all fire types of damage.

Let's just be selfish and say that you have a boss that you are hitting & you have +1000 damage and no one else is even hitting it.

The easiest way to look at it is with DPS. DPS for 50 fireballs with a 30% crit is:

((.7 * 1815) + (.3 * 1815 * 2.25))/3.5 = 713 DPS

With a full scorch stack:

(1.15 * (8*((.7 * 1815) + (.3 * 1815 * 2.25)) + ((.7 * 761) + (.3 * 761 * 2.25))))/29.5 = 819 DPS

For the duration you're talking about, that's 175 seconds, at a difference of 100 DPS/sec.... 17500 damage you'd be missing.

This assumes 225% damage for crits, 30% crit rate and 1000 damage (100% for fireball and 42.8% for scorch) and 0 lag.

Please feel free to check my math. ;-)

Now let's do an even more realistic comparison :P
1200dmg, 30% crit, hit cap, standard 2/48/11 spec (ktangent seemed to use a 40/21 or similar), 10% CoE, Misery
Fireball: Average 3617dmg, no iScorch (1205.67dps)
Scorch: Average damage 1460dmg, no iScorch (973.33dmg)

Take an eight minute fight, fairly common for 25-mans.
Pure Fireball spam: 578,720dmg
Scorch rampup, Fireballx9 Scorch: 634,241dmg (55521dmg more, extra 115.669dps)

I realized I forgot Scorch's extra 4% crit, which will add a little more.

Indeed. And on trash, the rule is: for every 3 fireballs you can get off after the scorch spam, do two scorches. Not that it matters that much, but it will help you out a bit.

lol... I was using what I remembered from a long time ago... not a specific spec. I had thought it was 225% damage for fire crits... must be 240% or something, eh? Thanks for the correction, though I'm glad my numbers weren't off by that much (115 dps vs 100 dps).

Should be thought provoking for the OP. ;-)

Fire damage is 210%. 150% base crits, with an extra 40% from Ignite. And of course a little more if you use CSD (216.3% total, I believe).

If it was less damage why would it be a talent? And who would use it? (It only takes one scorch to reset the timer on a stack of 5 after the initial 5 scorches.)
