40 Plate Follow

#1 Feb 19 2008 at 11:11 PM Rating: Decent
I'm not entirely there yet, but I was wondering when I hit level 40 and gain the ability to use Plate armor should I just go to the AH and buy everything that looks good just because I can use plate now or should I stick with whatever I have equipped and just work with that till I get drops from instances/mobs?

Run RFD, there is a level 40 chest piece and a level 40 helm that drop that you can wear for at least ten levels. Those are good starter plate pieces to get you going. I personally wouldn't go the AH route because you're going to want to save your gold for a mount which you can get at 40 also.

The BS-crafted Heavy Mithril set is pretty awesome for tanking, and can usually be found for pretty cheap on the AH (depending on server). They will last you quite a while.

For solo play, you'll want stuff with +Str, like tbrady suggested. You just have to hope you are lucky on the drops.

I don't know what level you are right now but if you're level 35+ I would definitely start checking the AH every few days and keep your eye out for good deals. I had my full plate set waiting for me when I turned 40 and I don't think I spent more than 2g for any one piece. I also made some of the blacksmithed gear but the various pieces have different level requirements so not all of it is usable right at 40.

Hit up Ulda and get the Revoloshes greaves. +10 stam on top of what ever random enchant it has. I like Revosh's greaves of the bear. =D

+10 stam
+9 str est. (can't see my armory atm)
+9 stam est. (can't see my armory atm)

only requires lvl 40 to wear.

That's what I do.

On my toons that can wear better armor at 40, I try to stock up on AH gear so they can suit up right away when they ding. Plate greens are fine for warriors, but there is some good blue BoE gear for them in the low 40s if I remember correctly that isn't too spendy.

Then I just save my money and only replace armor items through quests and instances until I can get outlands gear off the AH at level 57.

At 57, I wouldn't recommend getting Outland gear on AH. I would recommend getting that extra level, and GO to Outland. Quest rewards are phenomenal.

Also, you're so close to lvl 60, that you'll need to save up for your epic mount.

if this is your main, then don't waste any money at the auction house. just run instances - RFD, then uldaman, mara, ZF, etc. soon you will have a nice set, and some of the mail you're wearing is just fine for a while, especially the SM stuff. do make sure you have the SM shield because it will last for a very long time.

you're going to be replacing gear so quickly, i wouldn't ever waste gold at the AH unless you have a piece that's really outdated and you can replace it cheaply.

now, if you have a couple of 70's with uber gold to spend, then go ahead and pimp yourself out.

Like the other's are saying it depends on your cash flow, if you have gold to waste by all means upgrade to whatever plate benefits you. Just remember you can wear any kind of armor ^_^

Just to be the devil's advocate...

Depending on your play style... (in the post 2.3 world) chances are youre going to out-level any plate you get for the moment you ding 40 before too long. I definately wouldnt buy any off the AH unless its affordable and has useful stats.

But beyond that, if isntances arent really your thing, I'd just identify a few quest rewards you can get over the next few levels and work on those. There are 2-3 quests in both Dustwallow and STV that offer plate rewards. And more once you hit Tanaris. Conceivably, you could assemble:

Jungle Boots (STV)
Protective Engineer's Leggings (DWM) -- Pally item, but still...
Refitted Bruiser Gauntlets (DWM)
Rustproof Waistguard (DWM)

... all before you ding 40. And they wont cost you anything but time.

No one is going to give you a hard time if you've still got 2-3 pieces of mail at 45 or 46. Just dont be like my hunter (56 and still wearing leathers -- and not even particuarly good ones -- in 4 slots).

... You aint seen nothin' yet.

I used [Nub Armguards of the Cunning Midget] (with a +5 int enchant on them....) untill OUTLANDS (!!!!!)!. Even like level 60 or something... Shame on me.

Edit: This was on my hunter.

I think I had like...75% reduction with that stuff at 40. I just wanted to see how high it would go :)

Nightscape Tunic (+15 Health)
Glyphed Bracers (+1 Agi)
Ranger Leggings of Agility (+24 Armor)
Jangdor's Handcrafted Boots (+32 Armor)

And... not to be outdone...

Master Hunter's Rifle (not enhanced)

Most of my mail gear is kindof questionable too. And, prior to the MHR I was using a level 32 gun for at least a dozen levels. I have a better bow (unfortunately I've never skilled up that weapon), but I'm waiting to use up my last few hundred bullets before switching.

Thankfully my pet's a badass. But I wont be hitting Outland until 60, unless there is a windfall of sick quest rewards coming my way in the next few levels.

That's nothing, my bracers were level 20 ones ffs :P

All BM pets are badasses (I trust you're BM..?). You might as well get outlands at level 58. I'm 65 now and I haven't even finished Terokkar (sp?) yet. You replace insane amounts of your gear there, and it's not small upgrades... I went from like 500 AP to 800 AP after doing half of Hellfire.

I actually farmed 39 PvP and got epic bracers that required level 40. I then leveled to 48 in whatever I happened to find and bought tons of pvp stuff at 48. The PvP gear isn't bad for solo play at those levels.

on the offshoot topic of nubbie gear that was used forever due to lack of reasonable replacements/bad luck:

I used http://www.wowhead.com/?item=9793 until my mage was 59.
