Levelling build when having a mage partnerFollow

I am sorry if this has been asked before. I tried to find the answers in the sticky but to be honest never saw anything regarding levelling builds.

I currently have a 19 pally that I want to level up to 70. In end game I intend for her to be a healer.

I will be levelling with a mage. Whilst levelling I don't mind doing some healing but am not really interested in tanking in instances. I am happy to pickup a ret/holy build - can someone suggest a build to get me to 50 please?

Alternatively if you think the way to go would be aoe grind with the mage please post a build (though I vaguely remember something about this not being viable till you reach a certain level).

Thanks in advance.

Wait till at least level 35 (40 is better) before going prot for aoe grinding.

Best choice for now is to run with a Ret spec until then. You will find that you still have the ability to tank and heal until at least 40. After this it talents begin playing a part in specs more and more.

As far as duoing with a mage:

When you get Righteous Fury have this buffed always. It will help a great deal with keeping the targets off your mage friend.

If you plan on tanking at lower level instances I would suggest picking up Redoubt in the Protection Talent tree.

If not go straight Ret for a dps build. Pick up Seal of the Command and get the slowest 2H sword or mace you can find (weapon speed higher then 3.0 is good, 3.5 is best). Try to go for ...of the gorilla gear if you can or eagle for some extra stamina too.

This is what my GF and me did, she as a frost mage, me as holy pally.

I would advice to go up holy tree to get uninterruptable heals first, as this will help you loads when aoe-grinding or killing elites. When you need a heal, just switch aura and heal up. After that, I would grab a few of the survival talents from prot, to help mitigate damage. Then either keep moving in holy (if you want to heal instances as well) or go up ret to grab a bit dps.

I don't remember when you get Righteous Fury, but when you get it keep it up all the time. When you get BoSalv, keep it up on the mage at all times. This will make you tank/healer and mage the dps. Stack as much spelldamage as you can, it will also help your healing.

After the fight, mage can provide water if needed and you can heal both up. If you go down the holy tree, your heals will cost less and you will have a bigger manapool.

Also, if you both get a threat meter, mage can keep behind you at all times, and you should have no problems killing everything fast. Mobs will stick to you and mage can pick them down, either aoe-style or one by one.

Some say 30, other 35, I'd say 40. That mount will help you round up mobs and taking less hits in the process. Just be ready for when they know you off the horse :)

Thanks in advance.[/quote]

Basically, if you have a 2 person group (ANY class, ANY talents, even lousy ones) you will find no troubles when questing your way up (yes quests are the fastest way to level these days, since a recent patch). So, pick any talents you like and play around with those talents to get a feel about them.

If you want to go AoE grinding (and I would advise you to try it, it is a TOTALLY different game but major fun), start at level 40 when you can get the talent "Holy Shield". Try something like this build at 40 (opinions may vary, but it works wonders):

http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=sZV0xIx0zgoo

The AoE goes something like:

Pre-fight: always put up righteous fury, Blessing of Sanctuary and retribution aura
Pre-fight equipment: fast one hander + shield with a shield spike on it (as for other equipment: mostly defence/stamina with some spell damage on the side
Pre-fight: put up Seal of Light (with more experience you can switch to Seal of Wisdom, but first get the feel of it)

The Gathering: Try to gather a lot of (preferably) MELEE mobs while you are both mounted and "herd" them together.

The Termination: both dismount, you cast Holy Shield (and recast it as often as possible) and a highest level Consecrate, judge your Seal of Light on a mob, recast Seal of Light (might be Seal of Wisdom when you get more experience with it) and whack on the judged monster. Let your mage friend wait for a few seconds (few ticks of consecrate and additional threat to you from reflective damage through holy shield/shield spike/retribution aura) and your friend can start putting in the hurt through Blizzard or Flamestrike or Arcane Explosion or basically any AoE spell. Put up another consecrate and 5 secs later: all mobs dead.

Reason that you will start using seal/judgement of wisdom later: this seal/judgement returns mana to you while Light will return life to you. Through your efficient healing spells though, 1 mana >>> 1 life, so if you end with half life and full mana, you can easily heal to full.

Just play around with it. Search places with melee mobs only. Have fun. At 57 your AoE build could look something like this for example:

From there on, it is a matter of preference, I would advise to go for Deflection in the Retribution Tree, but hey, whatever rocks your boat. At 70, the game changes completely, so once you reach that (which is still a long way, seeing you are 19 at the moment), check these boards again.

Have fun!

Edit: spelling.

Ha! - My GF and I did same thing too...I wonder how many BF/GF combos went pally/mage...interesting.

Anyway, I am pally and my GF is mage, I specc'd Ret, and she went fire, we basically just burn through mobs as fast as possible. then I heal us after if we need it. At first we had to drink relatively often, although BoW helps alot. After I got Seal of Wisdom at L38, we havn't had more than 5 minutes downtime total from drinking. She plans to respec frost at 50 to get wetpet, and I plan on going holy at 62. I would highly, greatly, urgently suggest this Ret/Fire combo, It has been amazing. We are both level 48 now with around 3.5 days /played each. I'd say we did something right...

Always use judgment with seal of wisdom as an opener with a mage partner, you'll be amazed at the efficiency. =)

Cheers
