"Well... it's one louder, isn't it?"

Okay, so my mage is fire, and I mainly play solo. I've been working on a build that supports that but also works well for the occasional 5-man. I do not PVP and am highly unlikely to ever raid.

I've been modifying the 2/48/11 to fit these needs (rather than 10/48/3 because Elemental Precision and Improved Frost Nova seem more useful for solo play).

Looking around at builds online I've noted that most people with this build do: 3/3 Elemental Precision, 5/5 Improved Frostbolt, 2/2 Improved Frost Nova, and then Icy Veins.

My question (finally): why the Improved Frost Bolt? I never use FB except versus the occasional fire immune mob. I'm only level 45 - will such mobs become much more common later?

It seems to me I'd get a little extra survivability (without gimping my usefulness in 5-mans) out of only putting 2 into Improved FB and putting the other 3 into Frostbite instead, as that could proc from CoC and the situational use of Ice Armor?

Am I missing something? Where do others here who use that build put/plan on putting your eleven?

Well, the spec you're referring to is mainly built towards raid utility, IE: putting out as much dps as humanly possible. The only thing those 11 points are about is icy veins and elemental precision. These add to dps tremendously, which is why they're a favorable addition to the important 47 points in the fire tree.

The improved frost bolt is merely filler to get to the Icy Veins.

Leveling is a lot different then raiding though, so I'd suggest you pick the talents you think would benefit you most in the near future, because you can always respec, and questing is tedious enough as it is :P.

In that case, would technically putting the Improved Frostbolt points into Frost Warding actually be slightly more useful then? Or is Frost Ward never used in raid either?

Thanks, ITA with this. I've been putting all my points into fire and into the things I can use now (and it's working great - I was really concerned about the survivability of a fire mage as I've never played a squishy class up very high, but I'm amazed at how well she does). And in fact my final build won't be so much 2/48/11 as 1/49/11 or 0/49/12 or 0/50/11 anyway. Things are different when you don't raid. :) But of course with that said, cookie cutters usually get that way for a reason.

having gone through t5 raids I have yet to use frost warding, I find it to be mostly a waste of mana.

3 points in Elemental Precision for the spell hit awsomenes. 2 points in ImpFB because Frost Warding really is useless to me. And the next 5 in Ice Shards >> I farmed 8 fire primals in 2 hours.
