Good spell damage for MoonkinFollow

Hi, I was just wondering what a good spell damage range is for raiding as a Moonkin (Karazhan). I currently have more +crit than I need so I can afford to lose some to get more damage. I'm currently at +640ish damage/22.78% crit unbuffed.

Liek 101%? Smiley: nod

I have no idea what's a good spell damage amount for Karazhan, though. An old guildie of mine is at around 840, but I don't know if that's overkill.

Honestly, get as much as you can and go from there. I'm curious as to how 22% crit chance is more than you need, though. Aren't crits awesome for DPS and stuff? It's spike threat, I realize that, but I figure either you want to crit or you don't. And looking at Nature's Grace, I'd be guessing you want to crit.

See, I think this is why I stick to melee classes. Spell damage and crit math confuzzles me.

640 seems kind of low to me. My lock was doing good in the ~800 range and started topping damage meters in the 960 range.

Id say to shoot for around 750min.

The reason I found crit to be high was because of aggro issues...nothing you can do when you get 5 starfire crits in a row!

For spell damage, I haven't got the enchants on gloves/bracers yet but plan to soon. I'm in mostly blues except for green shoulders/boots and crystalweave bracers/S1 gloves. I'm doing a lot of AV to get rid of the greens (shoulders refuse to drop in Mech!!!); is there anything else I can do which will help? I've got Glyph of Power on my helm and Spellthread for legs.

if ur worried about threat, equip a threat reduction trinket, put 5 talent points in subtlety and switch to cat form and use cower if ya can

I was like 750 when i had no problems of agro, this was with a 70 frost mage though. Now i got 901 standard without trinkets wich is awsome, but i have to get a 2% threat reduction for the threat, im pulling agro almost everytime. So a tip, stay around 750 and make sure you get more intel or intel/spirit...it will give you more dps because you can cast longer ;)
good luck

Don't bother with this. Really. As a feral druid often butting up against the tanks threat I can tell you how useless this is more than 15sec into a fight. By then the tank might have 100k threat and cower drops it by 1170 so about 1%. Any further into the fight and you won't even notice the drop.

Also, you need to be in melee range to cower & and it can miss or be dodged or parried as well.

Basically, you waste mana shifting to cat then back to moonkin, and waste the time spent moving in to melee range. Better to just stop casting and wait for the tank to build more threat.

I thought max rank cower reduced threat by 1000, but that that amount was reduced by innate threat reduction and Salv, making it around -500 threat? Either way, not terribly helpful.

Just dont do anything and count to 5-10 and start dpsing again. I've never understood why people can't just wait for the tank to gain more aggro before starting up again.

Thoug if you pull on a boss, short of running to the tank ahd hope he can taunt it... :/

At least with Starfire you have a few seconds of cast to cancel the cast if your threat has jumped. When I am shredding and OOC or T4 2pc procs you can get 3 shreds or more in quick succession (every second) if you have a full bar to start. If they all crit you have very little time to stop (especially when you are doing white damage even if you don't keep shredding. Many's the time i've had to quickly turn my back on the boss and pray :)

Remember that crits do not generate extra aggro. They just generate as much aggro as any other attack that does that much damage would. There's no such thing as "Too much crit". (Well, ok, technically 101% as Mazra suggested would be too much, but at reasonable levels of gear, what I said stands).

If you crit several times in a row and look to be about to pull aggro, stop attacking. You just bought yourself a few seconds outside the 5SR and some extra mana regen that comes with it. You would have come that close to pulling aggro had you done that much damage with no crits.

Also, personally, I'd say better than using Cower would be to equip a Feral AP weapon and run up and Meleekin for a moment to let the tank get a threat lead and to regen a bit of mana for when you need it.

Not knowing whether ~640 spell damage and 22.75% crit are good numbers for my feathery friends, I do know that being "hit capped" at 16% chance to hit with spells will net you more DPS than anything else you can increase via gear, buffs or talents.
What I can tell you is a lucky string of 5 Starfire crits can actually be a big bonus to you. This allows you some time to stand idle and gain standard mana regen, as suggested earlier. For me if I'm in cat, a lucky string of Shred crits can also net a nice bonus, allowing me to quickly toss in a Rip and just auto attack until just before an energy tick at 100 energy. Usually if I get this lucky I'll have a clearcast waiting for my next Mangle. (Yes I do use the Idol of Terror and have not picked up Everbloom simply because I cannot depend on having a bear up front and even when I do, his Mangle uptime is far less than mine if he's tanking and I'm not.)

Thanks for all the advice -- I usually stop DPS if Omen flashes on my screen, but I never thought about the advantage of doing so after a bunch of crits.

I'm seeking another piece of advice...

My mana pool is pretty small (8015 with MOTW up); should I stack more spell dmg to get more out of the mana I have, or get some +INT enchants/gems and 6mp5 to chest, etc?

6 mp5 is cheap and, IMO, every caster should have it. Not sure for druids on the other stuff, but I'd say, personally, to stack more damage.

Press "ESC" quickly, you lose target that way. Quickier than turning your back, both to stop and to come back hitting. When you think you are good again, just press the hit button or right click the mob.

Yes that would be the smart thing to do. Unfortunately, I have set Esc up as my Ventrilo push to talk key :)

I don't think I could change this now as it is so built in to my mind that I sometimes go to hold down escape when talking to someone on the phone while on my computer at work!!
