Leveling a Paladin - switch to Prot?Follow

Hey guys, quick question(s).

I've been following Jame's leveling guide on my first Horde character. It's been speedy so far, but as usual, I'm less than thrilled with Paladin DPS. My Ret isn't too bad, I just don't care for the uncontrolled burst damage of SoC (in some fights I find SoR does better DPS). I've gone with Ret because it is the "leveling tree," but I am interested in Prot for AoE grinding.

What areas are viable in the near future for my Paladin as a prot build (currently level 43)? I'm thinking maybe Wastewander camps in Tanaris, then pirates, and then onto Sorrow Hill. Any others?

Second part: in your opinion, would I be better off with this AoE grinding route than I would be following Jame's guide? I realize it would take a lot longer to follow the guide if I went Prot (as my DPS on individual mobs would go way down).

Mostly I'm just interested in a change, but wondering if it's worthwhile.

Edit: Also, any items I should definitely scoop up as a Protection build?

at 43 you can reasonably switch to prot. i still think ret will level the fastest, because quests will go faster. honestly, if at 43 your ret isn't getting good dps, something's wrong. most would agree thats about where ret shines in dps most easily. if you can't dps with a pally, prot may be more suited to your playstyle. doesn't hurt to try it anyway.

Yeah, I'm just used to faster DPS classes (my last three classes I have leveled have been Hunter, Druid, and Mage. None of these are known for low DPS).

The other problems I have are probably that my weapons right now is only 2.5 speed, and I believe SoC is not that great with anything under 3.0 speed. The variability of SoC is also a big negative for me; sometimes I can kill enemies in under 15 seconds, and sometimes it'll take upwards of 35.

I might respec to try Protection a little later, but I think I'll stick with Ret for now; thanks!

If you have money, get a Kang, or Executioner Cleaver off the AH. And then get IBS at 51 which will carry you to outlands. cuz yeah that 2.5 wep is killing you.

***** that, change to prot now. It is sooooooooooooo much more fun than ret. I made the switch at 41 (see my post down the page).

For sure, I wouldn't try to level just by doing the AOE grind, for one I think it is boring and with the new xp/quest questing is just so much quicker.

That being said, you can easily combine the two. The quests where you have to get a certain drop from some beast, you can run in, round them all up and AOE those creatures until they die. Then loot your quest objectives and you're done.

As for the single targets, it is true that your DPS will drop, but there are some very fast fights as prot also. Redoubt + Holy shield equals 60% chance to block (and you better have a shield spike on). Then when reckoning procs coupled with your SoR the damage starts to add up.

In the end, money is easy to make in WOW, so just fork out the cash and respec. If you don't like it, fork out some more and respec again.

get the slowest weapon possible. i prefer a minimum of 3.6 speed. usually a two hand axe will do this. this gives you lots of SoC procs

only thing i didnt like when lvling as prot was the casters some of them was a pain in **** like some dragons if getting more than one it sucks blowing pots or bubbles and bandages. but on plus side get groups pretty much non-stop. only hit slow time when i got around 57 or so. everyone was wanting me in brd but exp slowed down and i wanted outlands so i just quested some. be nice if there a a lvling guide for prot pallies list of mostly melee mobs for the quest and what not.
