Finally dinged 68 and got my flight form... got shot down within 5 minutes exploring a bit too close to a Horde town. :)

My question is, I seem to be having a lot of trouble gaining altitude when I first switch into the form. Going up and down once I'm in the air is no problem, but from ground to sky is really hard unless I've started out jumping from something high. I was stuck on a little island in Zangarmarsh for like 5 minutes today because I wouldn't be high enough by the time I got over the water and kept getting kicked back into caster. I'm using right-click and mouse up, just like I was swimming. Am I doing something stupid, or is this just how it is?

Exactly what I'm doing, AFAIK. Maybe this is one of the few places in the game where they made phsyics count, and I just can't gain altitude as fast as I'd like?

Also, I thought you could pick herbs in flight form? I get "You are flying."

Grats on flight form!

Lay on yer 'jump' button (space bar) when yer magnetized to the ground in flight form; that'll shoot you out of its gravitational pull. Sit works the same way if you want to go down without having to move yer point of view drastically.

Have fun,
-B

p.s. (edit) You can pick herbs in flight form but you have to be "on the ground" (this is where the sit button becomes handy). Nose bomb the ground until you level out and then you will be able to herb yer node.

If it acts in the same way as a flying mount, you can keep you finger on space bar until you have enough height to start flying forwards. 'Sit' works the same for descending.. It took me a while to get used to flying and i wasnt sure i liked it at first, but after a while you'll wonder how you did without it...

Yep, just tried it - was able to herb and space/x work like a charm. Kind of fun to log out at the very top of the Scryer's tier. :)

ETA: rate-ups for all the answers, thank you!

for a descend I tend to like more a free fall and a quick switch back. hehe

Just switch back before you hit the ground, not that I'm talking out of personal experience here of course, but it hurts, ehm I mean looks like it hurts.

PROTIP: When idling at the arena guy in shat, do /mountspecial. I never get tired of that animation, and it annoys all the other classes who can't do it. (ofc it requires you to be in flight form (DUH) and standing still).

Color me clueless, but I actually spammed /sit in-game to see if you were right, until I realized that by 'sit' you mean 'x'. Smiley: lol

Kids, don't sniff too much ozone. It's bad for ya, mkay?

I usually jump before shifting to ff. Looks really cool if you time it right, especially from cat form. Also puts me high enough to just angle up using the mouse and go.

Physics is arbitrary in WoW. We fly straight up at the same speed as straight down, without even flapping. Zipping around Terokkar we fly right through dense thickets of small branches, but bust our beaks on single larger ones. Something I find particularly annoying is that we can't fly right into the water and hit aquatic form instead of bouncing off the surface. No real reason to do that, I just think it would be fun.

Ultra-Pro Tip:

While moving on a flying mount or in flight form, hold in the [Insert] key to fly upside down.

Cheers!
