So Ive got this friend...Follow

#1 Feb 17 2008 at 6:42 PM Rating: Decent

First off, I know nothing about endgame pve rogues. I've got this friend, we use him for kara when we have an opening. He generally does about 7% of the dps, far below the tanks. Thats just boss fights too, not even including trash. He might kill me but heres his profile.

He got his T4 gloves recently, he isn't using them right now. That has a few people upset since he won a roll against 2 guildies that wanted them. Thats a different story and that problem has been resolved.

quick update, he just passed on Blade of the Unrequited.

1.) He needs more hit rating. I'd say around 150~ for kara.

2.) WTF kind of spec is that? Not sure what he is doing/thinking...

3.) He has sword spec but is using a dagger MH...

4.) Tank sword??

5.) Bad gem choices!

My advice?

1.) Get the glad swords, only 27k honor and well worth it for two 91 dps swords.

2.) Spec 20/41 Combat swords. It's cookie cutter for a reason.

3.) Gem for hit. +8 hit if you can afford, otherwise +6 hit will do for now.

4.) Keep SnD up 24/7!

Goodluck,
Bloodbringer, Madoran

1360 AP, 70 hit, 16% crit and a horrible spec... No wonder he does crap damage. He must be a very good friend if you take him with you in Kara.

I laughed at all his +40 armor enchantments btw.

Even with that gear and spec there is no way in hell he should be getting out dps'd by the tanks. He must just not know what to do while raiding...

I'm sorry, but their spec is all over the place, and they definitely need a lot more +hit and +crit. I also like all of the +crit gems

I just wanted to point this gem out in particular
"5% snare and root resist"

Sure it has +12 crit but it's pretty useless (the above) imo.

Now, I know that I need a whole lot of new gear (which I'm working on), but even my +hit and +crit is higher than theirs and my spec isn't all over the place. I suggest following what those above had said though. Should help more.

A lot of stuff. Man, I thought my gear was all over the place.

1. New Pants. Like, yesterday.
2. If he's focusing on PvE (i.e. Kara), he needs to regem for +hit.
3. Get new weapons, new spec. He needs to pic a spec and choose weapons accordingly. Looks like mainly combat swords. Get S1 swords w/ 27k honor.
4. Even though they are purple, I think those are druid boots. Why does a rogue need intellect (the virtual kind)?
5. He's been to Kara before, and he's got heroic drops (Mainly the 60 badge Dory's cloak). He should know how to play his char unless he's been handheld through the heroics. 7% DPS is horrible. I'm muti-specced and do 25-30%, and my gear isn't great.
6. Crit chance at 16%? I didn't think you could have lvl 70 gear and not be over 20% base.

Good luck. I just hope he doesn't ninja all your drops in Kara. That's the only way he should have the sun eater. And if he PvP's he should have a thrown weapon, even if it's Fitzs Throwing Axe.

He didnt ninja the sword. His old sword was far far worse than sun eater for dps...

The tank happened to be a pally that didnt want it.

Luckily we dont have a feral druid nor a rogue normally. Luckily for him really, he gets the leather we dont want basically.

But less than 7% DPS is ridiculous in Kara for a rogue for boss fights. He is definitely using his abilities wrongly or standing in front of bosses or something.

The armory is down for me right now so I can't see his spec, but make sure he knows at least to stand behind bosses, as they can parry and block attacks from the forward 180 arc but not from behind.

But warriors love parrys!

Simple answer, bench him for raids. See if he likes being on the outside of the raid group and if he wants to raid again, tell him to learn how to play his class.

And I wonder why Blizzard is nerfing Mag...

Looking at his spec, I guess he:
- opens with ambush
- spams hemo with a dagger
- doesn't use SnD
- finishes with evis

He should at least change the last three habits.

#14 Feb 18 2008 at 1:03 PM Rating: Decent

That sounds about right, but I think he uses SnD a lot. Im not sure tho. What are the main reasons spamming hemo with daggers is bad? Is it because they are so fast?
#15 Feb 18 2008 at 1:07 PM Rating: Decent
I'm no expert but I think it's because hemo is much better with a slow, hard-hitting weap instead of a quick, less hard-hitting weap.

This is because it does it does 110% weapon damage. Meaning you want the highest weapon damage you can get so it hits as hard as it can. Daggers are fast and therefore don't have the top end damage required to make hemo shine. (minus the lower energy cost and debuff...)

EDIT: this might be very old and outdated info and therefore not true anymore but I found it to be a very good explanation about weaps and hemo:

The exception to this rule involves Hemorrhage and Ghostly Strike. Neither ability is normalized, meaning that slow weapons with high damage ranges will inflict greater overall damage than fast weapons with low damage ranges.

Hemo was normalized with 2.3

The basic mechanics of Rogue weapon choice for MH/OH is explained in the FAQ.

Oh and your friend is still terribad.

I had a feeling it was old info but I just thought I'd throw it out there.

Thanks for the correction ;D

Whether the ability is normalized or not, slow weapons with higher damage ranges will still hit harder.

Example:

Sword, 2.5 spd, 100 DPS, damage range 200-300
Dagger, 1.5 spd, 100 DPS, damage range 100-200

If you use an instant attack it bases the damage off the weapon's original damage range, meaning the sword above will always hit 1.5-2 times harder than the dagger.

Out of curiosity, are you in the same guild? It seems that you're on my server, so I'd be happy to send your friend a tell and explain to them exactly why they phail so hard.
