Leveling Lowbie pets to 70Follow

#1 Feb 16 2008 at 10:25 PM Rating: Decent
I was looking through the stickies and couldnt find an answer for this...

My hunter is 70 but I have a level 58 pet I really want to get to 70. I was killing some level 55 mobs and I noticed he wasnt getting xp. Do they have to be in the level range of lvl 70 to get xp? The other question do they gain any xp if I turn in quests with him while hes out? So any tips on leveling him fastest would help alot! Thanks

You must attack mobs that are high enough to give you xp (or would, if you weren't 70). So mobs need to be at least green to you for it to help the pet's xp. No greys. Forget them.

And no, pets gain no xp from your quest turn-ins. Only from killing mobs. If you have some friends, or close guildies, that you run instances with, talk to them about if they would mind you running with them and keeping your pet by your side. The pet can then soak up xp (if the instance is high enough, of course). Being specced MM can help here because you will do more damage yourself, even with the lack of pet damage.

Hmm... I'm surprized that Mulgrin hasn't added this question into the stickey thread. It would be a great addition. It's a pretty common pet-related question.

There are also a few pretty decent places to level a really low pet if you can't always find a group that'll let you bring in a low-level pet. In Terrokar, there's a bloodelf camp that has level 63ish casters all over the place. I think there are also a few places in blade's edge that have a high concentration of casters. If you can handle skettis without an effective pet, that might be a good place, too.

Yeah your best option is to find casters. They will stand in place allowing you open up on them, compared with melee mobs which you will often end up meleeing...

Thats probably your best bet.

Why even bother? Unless it's a rare pet or its a different color, why put yourself through the hassle?

I remember wasting an insane amount of time trying to level up my cat that I had ever since level 11 because I used a boar for leveling and let the cat get way behind. I felt like an idiot when I checked out Petopia and learned that I could just tame another cat my same level and avoid that grinding headache. Just in case the OP didn't know, taming a level 11 pet and leveling it to 70 is no different then just taming the same type pet at 70. I just throw that out there because I didn't know that at first.

I know what you mean Agent but its one of those wolves from EPL or WPL that is all torn up with peices of skin missing etc. I really like it because I havent seen anyone around with them especially at 70.

I have seen so many threads about training low level pets i am starting to wonder if there should be a sticky about it , not just for level 70,s but all levels.

At all levels it is better to find caster mobs if at all possible .

Always check out Petopia first as the pet you want may be available with the same skin at a far better level .

Remember always to attack the lowest mobs possible that are still green to you , the pet will get less damage and the same for you if they decide to attack you ,

Always attack from maximum distance , that means your threat takes far longer to build , and yes i have tried that out many times so i know it is right.

AT a very low level of pet to you the pet mending will be the most important thing but you can always keep the pet on passive or use cower , which is about the only time i can think of to use cower , i prefer to send in the pet and have tried out low level pets and either make sure it is casters or be prepared to melee as you will take aggro from your pet.

If the pet was very low like a level 3 boar you would find the pet will level almost every kill for the first 10 to 20 levels from level 20 to 30 i found it was more like every few kills , every 10 levels it gets slower and slower but is not bad up to 60 , from 60 to 70 , WOW that does get boring but most pets will be able to hold aggro if you take just auto shots .

At all levels of Player i found if the pet is about 5 to 10 levels below you it should hold aggro , If you still take aggro stand at max distance and be prepared to stop shooting until pet regains aggro ,
An add-on like omen will help you a great deal in understanding threat from your shots ,

it seems the hunters way is to always want to try new pets out , i know i have ,there is not a family of pets i have not tried as i rose to 70 , i have spent hours grinding so my pets gain levels , but i am a farmer at heart anyway and the quests are secondary to me.

You're 70. Find some upcoming Guildmates who want to run some of the entry level BC Instances, and help them through. You'll be able to contribute just as much as if you were their level, or even better. They'll thank you for helping them out, and your Guild will advance a few members. Your Pet will gain lots of EXP without you having to painfully grind it out solo. Just keep it at your side and let it soak in the EXP. Everyone wins.

Wasn't Blizzard going to address the pet leveling issues in some patch soon? I remember hearing something about lowering the amount of xp needed or something like that.

Did they ditch the plans or have they gone through with it? Nothing in the 2.4 patch notes indicates that the upcoming patch will contain the change.

Would like to level up that damn boar from RFK, but no way in hell I'm doing the grind as the system currently works. I have a hard enough time getting my level 70 cat to Best Friend loyalty level.

They should make loyalty increase over time instead of the xp calculation *********

Like, level 30-50 in two kills or xp required reduced by 10%?

According to Mania's blog (which I found linked off of Petopia) the change was that "they reduced the amount of experience that pets need each level by a flat 33%. Pets already needed less exeperience per level than player characters do, but now they need even less: previously they needed 25% of the XP of a player of the same level; but now they only need 16.75%." There's is more detail you can read by following the link.

I thought my pet was dinging faster after the patch.

I'm in no hurry to level my pet up so i tend to do a couple of levels for him whilst working on something else.

Terrokar is a good place for firewing signets or arakkoa feathers (both of which I've needed to farm for alts at various times), or I'll look at drop recipes for my profession and go there if the mobs are easy enough to kill petless.

Casters are best, but for melee I tend to use steady shot, concussive shot, steady shot (maybe x2) and then a quick arcane shot before they are in melee. If I start off far enough away the mobs are generally dead by the time they reach me, and no need to heal up afterwards.

Also remember to watch your pets health and threat as it levels up, I've killed mine a couple of times due to carelessness.

I'm actually going through this right now. After ditching my boar when I went to outlands, I later realised I missed the little bugger. I have recently gone back and tamed a LvL 49 piggy and took him to Nagrand. Leveled him to 51 in maybe 20 minutes just offing Clefthoof Bulls. Hopefully this quick LvL progression will continue at this rate. His loyalty level hasn't increased yet though wich kinda puzzles me...

I leveled the RFK black boar from 25 to 70, after I hit 70, and I leveled Mazzranache from 9 to 70 after I hit 70, so I can tell you the best thing to do is run through instances with them. Just don't send em in to attack :D

Nagrand is excellent for leveling lower level pets easy kills for a lvl 70 hunter decent enough xp for your pet I recently managed to finally catch Rak'Shiri in winterspring and am leveling her up slowly but surely when I have time in Nagrand I usually go between farming for leather and killing ogres for Rep so that the excersise isn't totally wasted.

Rak'Shiri is a lovely looking cat so looking forward to bringing her along on Guild runs once I get her up.
