help with equipmentFollow

I am a lvl 54 fire mage. I'm relativly new to the game.

I'm very confused about what equipment I should be trying to get. I keep hearing about spellfire and spellstrike sets, T4, T5, and other stuff i don't remember. I have no idea what this stuff is, or if it's even something I should want.

Can someone explaine this stuff for me or point me to a post that will?

Those really aren't things to worry about now. Just remember to go for stuff with 2 or more of Spell Damage/Spell Crit/Int/Stam until you hit 70. The other stuff becomes a lot easier to understand when you've reached 70.

Spellfire is a epic lvl 70 set that only a spellfire tailor can make and wear. You need to be a tailor and at around lvl 350 (don't really remember) you can choose from 3 different paths. Spellfire, Primal Mooncloth, or Frozen Shadoweave. The spellfire gives you +fire and +arcane dmg and the FSW give's +frost and +shadow. The mooncloth is mainly for priests.

Spellstrike is a epic 2 peice set (head and legs) with good spell dmg and +spell hit. Also a lvl 70 tailor'd set but you don't need to be a tailor to wear them.

Battlecast is another option for head and legs. It has lots more +stam then the spellstrike.

The tier sets are epic 5 peice raiding sets unique to different classes and specs (although the mage only has 1 set). The lvl 70 sets start at T4 and go to T6. T4 parts drop from Curator and prince in Kara, The two bosses in Gruuls and from Mag. T5 drops in SSC and TK and T6 parts drop in BT and MH.

But since all these sets are lvl 70 you don't need to worry about them right now. But take a look at the spellfire if your going to go fire or FSW if your going to go frost at 70. If those are things you want (yes.. you do want them) then keep lvling up tailoring (or get it... yes.. now) so you can start making the cloth you need for your sets when you hit 70.

Thanks DarkHybrid, he's absolutely right.
Pre-BC, don't worry about gear so much. Just try to get the best stuff you can, and level to 58+. Then head to Outlands. In Outlands, quest rewards will far exceed your gear from before, so be ready to do lots of replacing. As a mage, you should primarily go for +spell damage, intellect, and stamina. Spirit is good too, but shouldn't be your forward concern. So yeah, keep doing that until level 70.
As you level up the max, you'll have to start making choices. What spec do I want? What do I plan to do at level 70? If you are a tailor, your intended spec will directly affect your specialization choices. IE, if you want to spec 40/21/0 then you'd want the Spellfire specialization.
Bottom line is, don't worry about all that technical stuff for now :P

thanks for clearing some of that up for me.

I think what you're all telling me is that gear really doesn't matter too much until level 70, so just get whatever i can until then.

I dont have a tailor right now. My main toon is mining and enchanting. would it be really benificial to me to start leveling a tailor? Do tailors charge a fortune for the spellfire sets?

I am a fire mage so i guess spellfire is what i want to work for. Any other advice you have would be appreciated.

the crafted sets (spellfire/fsw/mooncloth) are Bind on Pickup, so only the person who makes them can wear them. The spellstrike/battlecast are BoE though.

Spellfire and FSW are also equippable only to the tailoring spec(shadowcloth tailor cannot equip spellfire set and vice versa) so make sure you select the right tailor spec based on your mage spec. For instance you won't be able to make both sets and respec back and forth. It will cost i think 100 gold to change tailor specs after you initially decide on one.
