Spec doesn't teach you anything. You can learn shot rotations as a BM, you can trap as a MM and all specs rely on their pets.
My opinion on it was that MM was fun while I was specc'ed into it, but once I decided to go BM, I didn't regret it.
BM is great for leveling because of the increased survivability of your pet, and ultimately, you. It's also great for instances because of the increased attack speed, and buffs to your pet. The only problem with it is that you have to learn how to take care of your pet or else you'll lose out on the talents that require you to have a pet out. But honestly, taking care of your pet is just part of being a hunter.
