so I have leveled to 34 with almost completely ret, save the 5 points in +str under holy. When should i swap over to prot for aoe grinding? i really just want to get this guy into outland ASAP.

Read the first page of this forum. there are AT LEAST three other posts talking about spec swapping.
However, I would recommend you wait a few more levels. Get the nicest 2 hander you can find and power grind/level your self up closer to 40 before making the swap. At 34 you really cant get to the sweeter aspects of prot yet. Wait till 40, get your mount, change specs and go to town. Just my 2 cents.

If you want "this guy into outland ASAP", you best ONLY quest. The exp from quests is improved a lot since a recent patch, while the exp needed to level is lowered. This means that these days, questing IS the fastest way to level.
And I believe that Ret offers the best help for most quests, so I would say: don't swap.

10% str at early lvls in no bueno. use those 5 pts in something more substantial for your level. do the math.
