Help with Raiding BuildFollow

#1 Feb 14 2008 at 11:47 AM Rating: Decent

Here is a copy of my armory and current build:

http://armory.worldofwarcraft.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Mug%27thol&n=Berto

http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/warlock/talents.html?2502020412230115412000030000000000000000000505000512200010000000

I am planning on Switching Demonic Embrace for Malediction.

I am just getting back into playing this toon and am running Heroics, Kera and on rare occassions 25 mains. I am also starting to PvP to get my arena gear; however PvP is not my primary interest.

Any advice on my build would be greatly appreciated, I know most people would say to forget about ruin and go with UA however I love seeing 4,000 crit SB O.o

Heres how I see the damage.

If you go 40/0/21 and use your 3 dots, then SB youll get 4-5 shadow bolts (Ill assume 4).

If you go 41/0/20 and use 4 dots, you get 3-4 (Ill assume 3) shadow bolts off before having to re apply.

Now you have a 16% chance of your SB hitting for 50% more. If we ignore ISB since it effects all shadow damage now then youre SB should be hitting for around 1600 for a normal hit, and 3200 for a crit.

Since you only have 16% crit, you can say that only 16% of that extra crit damage can be applied over each shadow bolt. So 16% of your extra 1600, then each bolt will be worth ~1860 on average

Youll be able to get 1 more SB cause youre not casting UA plus the extra damage from each from the higher crit. So overall youll do 1860+4*(1860-1600) = ~2625 more damage with Ruin.

With UA and its 120% coefficient, you will do 1050+900*1.2 = 2130 extra damage, plus the extra 16% of the 800 (1600/2) damage from a crit adds another 384 damage to that for a total of ~2514. So it looks like maybe ruin will do more damage but my calculations could be off (They probably are...) More chances for ISB and better trash damage might make that an even better choice.

Hmm, I gotta say when I started looking at the numbers I expected to see it the other way. Am I missing something here?

http://www.leulier.com/ is your friend ;)

Ruin won't start pulling ahead until you have in the region of 25% crit. At which point it would really be ready to switch over to destro unless you're the designated debuff *****.

On another note, your gems are *really* weird. And you need to work on your hit rating.

MrDallas, part of your problem is that you're assuming dots->sboltspam->dots->sboltspam. That's not how it works. It's keeping your DoT's up and having enough time for one or two sbolts before you have to refresh your next DoT, especially as UA. You're also looking at UA doing more damage than a non-crit sbolt, for almost half the cast time, and you don't have to stand still to do it to do its full damage.

Thanks for the Great info.

I am going to spec back to 41/0/20.

I also forgot to mention that I have the Handwraps of flowing thought that should help my spell hit some.

As far as my gems are concerned, I am assuming you are talking about my Resilence Gems. Are there any gems that you would recommend i change/get.

thanks and happy huntin!

Yellow Gems are a great source of Spell Hit. Swap out all your Resilience ones for +Hit ones, it'll help in the long run.

Your gems should all be either +8 hit, +9dmg, or the 5dmg/4hit gems as UA. As SM/Ruin or Destro, the haste gems coming next patch will be good (the 5dmg/4haste being the best after hit cap for destro, Ruin will still probably have 9dmg as best).

Good call Isfreak, but for a first approximation if you had no misses and you could just stand still you can see the damage isnt too great of a difference. If it were me though, I would stick to the 41/0/20 standard raiding build.

Another thing is when you start getting low on mana youll be life tapping and draining life. UA can still be ticking away during that period, and also increase the amount drained (4% from soul siphon talent)

Actually, had you followed my link and put in the data, you'd see it's not close. 40/0/21 is about 75dps short of 41/0/20. Which is huge :p
EDIT: 50dps difference, not 75. But that's still huge.
