Hunters and leatherworkingFollow

Say you have a hunter with skinning and leatherworking and you make your own armor.

What should you do when you get to level 40 and you have the option of mail armor?

Drop LW for either mining or herbs and go make some money!

Seriously, the whole "I'll be a leatherworker so I can make my own armor" is very difficult to do.
As you get higher up you'll see that most of the LW-craftable mail items have +stam and +int but no +agi or any of the other fun bonuses hunters would like to have. Personally I've found LW to be a fair sized money-sink esp. since most of the stuff you'll be making in large quantities just to lvl up the skill but it won't sell very well.

It may get cool again at lvl 70, but right now it kinda sucks and I'm wishing I had just picked up two gathering skills for the cash. I'm lvl 62 and even with the firehose of gold that is Outlands, I still haven't managed to save up for my epic mount yet. If I hadn't sunk a bunch into lvling my LW, I might be there by now, but as it stands I've got a bit to go yet.

Edit: Yeah, I've had my rant before over in the trade skill forum, so sorry for the repeat. I guess I'm just a little bitter, that's all.

I'll agree, making money > making your own gear because you can buy ANYTHING with money, making your own gear doesn't help with repairs, buying amm and food or buying your mount.

Leatherworking is only nice if you can't get into a raid and get better stuff than the craftable sets, but once you move passed the stuff you can craft, its only real use (for me) is turning knothide leather into heavy knothide and selling it. You can ***** yourself out as a crafter for hire, but thats not very consitent.

Some of the items you can make ARE really cool though, but the stuff that is profitable takes a lot of work to get (high LW skill and high, exalted mostly, reputation with certain outland factions).

Since you already have skinning and leatherworking, I suggest sticking to those. As has already been stated, dragonscale leatherworking is the best specialization for hunters. Skin everything you can and do so all the time. Sell the excess materials for cash. Sell any drops you can't use and is white or better at auction.

http://www.wowwiki.com/Leatherworking <- see specializations section about half way down the page

The biggest advantage to sticking with leatherworking will be the drums and BOP leatherworking items available at 70.

Skinning is makes a fair amount of money already for you I think. Since you already have high LW I don't suggest dropping it. Only because already have spent the money and time on leveling it. Stick with it. It will pay off in the end because of the things you can make for yourself at level 70. Skinning can make you more than enough money for your epic flyer if you have the time.

My advice, keep the skills you have. Pick up fishing and cooking. As you farm/kill crap, fish, as you quest, get the meat and make food. Once you get to OL and start hitting up fishing spots there you will start getting crazy amounts of primal water. Along with the primals you can sell, everyone likes stat food, so sell it. I have guildies who can easily make 500g a day from simply farming a few hours before raids, or while waiting for a group.

If you want to make serious money though, Drop LW and pick up mining, fishing, and cooking. With all the crap you can farm with these skills you will have more money than you know what to do with. Have fun.

As to your original question, crafted armor is "ok". You will get better from raids and some instances. If you like leatherworking then keep it. You can make armor kits and other nifty things to sell. I have a few sets of drums on my toon to help out in raids and instances. But, as a 70 with 375 skill I am not wearing anything I can craft with the exception of armor kits.

2.3 Is going to have some VERY nice LW patterns in it. High level raid content to be sure but still something to work forward to.

Anyway, if your thinking LW at 70 you get Crimson Hawk boots which are kickass and belt of the black eagle. Theres the Ebon set which is really nice for BM for the added to hit and the Thick Netherscale is widely used and sells very nice.

Don't bother with skinning unless you LW, leather doesn't sell that well.

It has been 2.3 for quite a while now.

.... Are you serious? Leather is a fantastic money maker. Certainly, high level ore will often net more gold but Skinning will get you leather a lot faster and more often than mining work gathers enough ore.

A consistent source of gold is never a bad thing. Stick with skinning.

I think it was pretty obvious he meant 2.4.

If you don't have fishing/ cooking. I recommend it. There is only 1 reason I have it on my new hunter alt. Deviate fish =D My friend helped me with the money for the Recipe for Savory deviate delights and in 1 stack I put on the AH I got 17g.

I am already making money, the first stack almost paid off the recipe, and you don't need any real fishing skill for it. just 1 to start catching them. Only need 85 cooking to cook them.

I farmed that savory deviate recipe back when. It took 12 hours of killing every beast in the Barrens. I heard that was typical. I averaged three kills a minute on my 60 warrior. It would have been quicker except for the travel time.

Although it does cost some cash to level but the end game gold you can make more than makes up for it. Armor kits are a huge moneymaker. LW bought my epic flyer, support all my other toons easilly and I also craft items for my 70 rogue and 43 druid.

Nothing that drops in Kara is as good as the chestpiece I made for myself. Imo. and I have cleaned that place out. (Now raiding SSC 5/6 bosses and tk 3/4 bosses)

LW is a long term skill and WoW is a long term game. Think about it,,, stick with it. I know it's tough but end game you will be glad you did.
