I have recently reached lvl 70 on my shadow priest, and I am having a hard time getting gear. I already belong to a raiding guild and they are eager to get me into kara, but I simply don't have the gear.

Use that for a list of gear you should get pre-Kara/Heroics.

I have a very hard time finding groups for 5 mans because no one will take a shadow priest for dps when they could get any other dps class (except maybe hunters, but only because of the stigma attached to them).
Well they must've been eating too many paint chips recently. A spriest is great for 5-mans and raids, not in terms of dps, but because of what you provide to the group. It's to the point where I would probably take a well-geared spriest over an equally geared rogue, especially if there are mana-users in my party already.

When I join groups people automatically assume I will heal, and thats very hard to do when you're offspec in mediocre healing gear, especially in heroics.
My question is, should I bite the bullet, respec holy/disc, and fight mages and locks over damage gear in instances or go for welfare PvP epics?
NO! If you want to stay shadow, and don't want to be stuck in the back healing, then stay shadow! If people are expecting you to heal, then just tell them you're shadow. If they say something along the lines of "omg ur a priest u heel" then leave the group. Spriests can't really heal 70 instances, even if they do have a healing set.
The point is, spriests and holy priests are two VASTLY different classes. Just because they both share the "priest" part of the name doesn't mean they're the same, a fact that it seems some people can't get through their heads. In the LFG tool, just add a note that says "shadow priest - don't ask to heal" or something. But if you want to be shadow, you're more than instance and raid-viable, and anyone on this board will probably tell you the same.
