Prot/Ret Leveling build optimal?Follow

#1 Feb 13 2008 at 2:40 PM Rating: Decent
After a year of not playing a pally (my first serious toon was one), I can no longer resist the pull of the light and have since rolled one. I'm a bit surprised at how much has changed in the mean time, but after reading over the FAQ I think I have the gist of things. Anyway, with all that needless introduction out of the way, let's now get down to brass tacks:

I have decided I'd like to mainly tank on this toon (with the occasional BG) and have come up with this to attempt to reconcile my want to tank well, BG well, and solo well. It only goes to 61 because by then I assume I'll be respeccing to a more focused build. Personally, I think it looks too scattered and ambiguous... which is why I ask the paladin gurus of this forum for assistance.

You called it ;)

I'm assuming you're using sword and board with your build? From my experience, pallys need to decide to either tank well or do big 2handed damage (ret) well. Trying to blend both equates to you being "meh" at both.

Then again, pallys can tank fine in pre-BC instances regardless of spec, so it "might" work if you have a two-hander for times you need to dish out DPS and a 1h/shield for times you need to tank. Once you get to about 60, though, you need to decided on a spec, and respec fully into it. Can't do both well at that level.

I was afraid of this, but I suppose it's best I fix it now (at lv13) than being at lv40 and wondering where I went wrong.

So you say that a full ret pally can tank? How much trouble will I be having pre 60 if I do that? If the answer is some derivative of "not much" (you used "fine" so I think so), then I'll possibly go full ret- which I find very satisfactory for I could heal or tank for instances and still be ret for BGs- and then respece to prot in the 50-60 range.

Would a sword and board be better for BGs (for survivability's sake), or is the damage difference too significant?

for BGs i like to use a 2h on my twink pally. i only go sword and board when im healing or running the flag for some extra armor.

also, you can tank just fine at least up till 40 (i've done it) as ret. i'm pretty sure you could go to mid 50s main tanking with no problem unless you have some twinked out uber AoE mages or something. holy shield and avengers shield are amazing for threat at those levels, if your an instance grinder.

I'm just starting into this with one, now being a lvl20 pally. I haven't looked into bigger groupings yet, still doing alot of soloing, but I absolutely LOVE my 2h abilities!! My talents though I've been focussing into the holy damage and dabbling in the prot/ret categories... Although I have ended up using my healing a little more when I'm in a one-zy two-zy sized grouping. Interesting, yet kinda fun. I'd rather beat the crap outta my targets, but should I focus on being the healer? Or can I still tank? I haven't gone with the sword and board, becasue of my 2h abilities.
