Prot is freaking awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Taking on 5-6 mobs my same level is so much fun. I tried the AOE grind with my mage, didn't like it, but this is fun with a pally. I do miss seeing the big OMFG numbers pop up on my screen when I get a huge crit, but this is awesome.

Before I use to be calculated on my pulls trying to only get 1-2 at a time, now I just rush in and say, "na na na na na na, you can't hurt me"

The joy of getting big single numbers was far outweighed for me by the massive wall of yellow numbers popping up whenever I hit Holy Shield or Consecrate. And when Recount jumps to 400 DPS on the encounter -- this was back in STV. I remember taking on Buzzards in Hellfire with a guild Rogue tagging along for his first taste of Outland. He made some comment about how Pallies are gimps on DPS. Musta been a jaw-dropping moment watching one only 2 levels higher (62 vs. 60 at the time) hit ~900dps against 15 or so buzzards (and surviving the entire encounter) while he was struggling to keep close to 250.

Oh yes.. there are still big numbers for Protection Pallies before end-game.

People still grind in this game? Because i have found prot questing to be completely horrible. If you are grinding i guess it would work. Questing is so much more efficient now that every quest gives a crap ton more XP than it used to. And there are more quests entirely.

But ive been trying to finish my netherstorm quests as prot and its ridiculous. The only good thing i can say about it is if a melee class tries to gank me they will join my arc of dead bodies without me really noticing much.

I just started going to Ogrila and when I first needed those Apexis shards I would grab about 10 of the mobs running around in there and aoe them down. I could grab more but I didn't want to leave myself too vulnerable to ganking.

oh I'm not grinding, but I'm quest AOE'ing. For instance, I needed 4 buzzard wings, which has a horrid drop rate. Collected 5-6 buzzards and with 2 pulls had my objective filled.

I totally agree with the new xp/quest, questing is best for leveling.

Is there a "prime" level to switch over to Prot from Ret while leveling? I'm at 39 now and I'm giving it some thought. Picked up my Pit Fighter's Shield from the Stromgarde quest chain and it looks pretty tasty for a prot spec.

Really, what level (and thereby, base spec) would be optimal to start the AOE grind?

well I am still a prot newb, but I'd say level 40 so you can use your mount to round up the mobs and be able to use holy shield.

40 If you want to wait for Holy Shield (probally prime right there)
34 If you are waiting for Reckoning (great for leaching)
30 If you want to hold agro WELL.

I went prot from the begining, and have never looked back.

Well, I decided to flip over last night, so I put a thorium shield spike on that Pit Fighter's Shield and went as deep into Prot as I could. I'll have to wait a level for HS.

Decided to do the North Point Tower quest in Dustwallow, and I could hold three mobs well, but a fourth put the hurt on me and made me DP and heal. I found that with 2-3, it was actually a little better for me to Judge SoL and then put on SoW, so I could regen both. Maybe I'm doing something wrong...

Now, maybe I'm crazy, but was I proccing JoLs and SoWs on my shield spike and retribution aura? If so, would I benefit more from a slow 1h to get more top-end damage out of it and forget about proccing as much, or should I keep my nice quick 1.50 sword to maximize Reckoning hits?

I always liked quick swords (the one from ZF--that you can combine with another to make an epic sword--comes to mind, also imo one of the coolest looking swords in the game) for more Reckoning and JoL/JoW procs, but my pally's been on the back burner for a while, so what do I know.

More in line with this thread, prot is pretty spectacular. Soloing King Bangalesh (sp) and all his adds in STV when he was still a level or two above me (and elite--not sure if 2.3 nerfed him too) was one of my favorite moments in WoW.

I also enjoyed lol'ing when runners would pull in adds. More @sshats with melee weapons? Ahahahahaha!!!!

edit: still, I'm addicted to the quick kills I get on my mage. Mobs/hour may be similar, but those 3-4 mob fights on the tankadin just take freakin' forever.

I'm not having the same experince and I think it's largely because my gear is horrible, I haven't done an instance since stocks.

Basically I cast JoL gather up mobs like let's say 4 troll warriors or some axe throwers (but close enough that they attack me). Back up against a wall or make sure no one is behind me. Throw up Holy Shield, lay down a consecrate and make sure I keep Holy Shield up (over consecrate). When the first mob dies I judge JoL then cast JoW.

Typically I end up casting divine shield casting a heal and sometimes I've had to Lay on Hands.

There are certainly some quest circuits where I curse the spec... The harder trolls in Northern STV, the Warlocks in the same area come to mind. The Birdmen in Southern Hellfire are loaded with casters that make me cry. Also.. elementals that MELEE with Fire/Cold/Shadow damage instead of Physical. (You can't block it)

Otherwise I find questing MUCH faster with protection. Kill 20 Raptors? 2 Pulls. Kill 8 each of 2 kinds of Ravagers? 3-4 pulls (only because of the space between them). It's even better when they're supposed to drop something too. Don't even get me started on Yetis... If there's a quest involving Yetis... they're all going to die 6-10 (however many I can round up before losing them) at a time.

This is what I have been doing. Have your ret aura on, blessing of sanctuary and your improved righteous fury. Mount up and collect 4-5 mobs around your level up to 2 levels higher. Judge a seal of wisdom on one mob and cast seal of light. Then just auto attack and you can use a holy shield if you like (I do). When you get that one mob down to ~10-15% health, swith to another target, judge seal of wisdom, cast seal of light and repeat.

You actually don't want the first mob to die too soon, becuase his beating on you can proc other things for you (like redoubt and reckoning)

That has been working well for me, I haven't played around too much yet on the different seals/judgements.

oh ya, this is my armory nothing special and I'm able to AOE them:

Yeah generally speaking, I'd recommend sealing light and judging wisdom, if you've got a bunch of meleers beating on ya. That said, monitor throughout the fight and switch as needed. Sometimes if it got ugly I'd judge AND seal light for that extra boost of hp. If I knew the pull was no problem, I'll either judge wis or light (whichever is lower) and seal...crusader is it? Whichever is the one that makes ya swing faster. Like I said, it's been a while.

My tankadin would be theoretically invincible - were it not for caster mobs.

We really need some kind of spell defence going on down nhah.

Because the Spell Warding talent is broken right? And those three Auras of ours that increase Fire, Ice, and Shadow resist are just crazy things that no one will ever need now that we don't have level 60s running Molten Core anymore.

Sorry, just a little bit of sarcasm, I don't mean that to sound harsh. We've got more than many realize against casters, but they'll still always be a pain.

There was quite a discussion about this some time back, and the optimal weapon speed for reckoning is between 2 and 2.2. So I generally like to find a weapon somewhere in that range. Anything slower and you're more than likely going to waste at least one charge of reckoning, and with something faster, you don't get as much oomph out of those extra swings.

If you want to look at the discussion, it's somewhere back on page 34 or 35.

The tricky thing with that is that our auras are kinda specific. If there was one, blanket "Resistance Aura", it'd be awesome. But frankly, in their current state they kind of suck, especially for AoE grinding where you not only have other melee mobs but potentially other casters casting different elemental spells. Not to mention that there isn't an aura for Nature damage, leaving you open to shaman types, which are the next most popular after warlocks, it seems.

Spell Warding is just too small to make a difference. What we really need is reactive spell defence, like a spell reflect function added to Holy Shield. Paladin tanking is all about reactive damage, and the crappy thing about caster mobs is that you have nothing to react to.

I'm not sure if I'm missing something in the script or what, but I judge all my mobs. Pull 5, judge 5 and use tab to cycle through them to refreash the judgement. This is why there is no down time.... but maybe a bandage.

I'd have no downtime after a 5 pull running with Double Lights and finishing off with a JoL/SoW... The downtime comes after a 12 pull where as each one dies it runs and pulls another one totaling about 17 in the end (though not all at once).

If your mana holds out alright judging everything that you fight then... okay. You re-set your attack timer every time you tab over as far as I know, so you'll slow down your melee hits (and procs) a smidge. The big drawback comes when you decide to pull more than 5, cause by level 60 and an epic mount so they dont all run away on you, that's kid's stuff.

I may be missing something, but why would you judge 5 different mobs, don't the judgements only proc if you attack that mob. So if you have 5 judgements running on 5 mobs the only one doing anything is the one you are beating on.

True. It's just easier for me to keep the judgements up, and I've already used all the mana that I'm going to use on my judgements. From there it's just tabbing through to keep them up. Guess it's just one method. I've also found it useful if your party has melee toons too, as not everyone seems to attack the same target as you (even when your deep in BM and it counts).

As for 12 mobs, and adds.... well being prot just makes you feel goddly, but your not...

More rum.

I'm with you 570%. I don't think I've "grinded" since FFXI... and grinding was the reason I left, just got to boring.

I've been having troubles in Netherstorm also >< one thing that comes to mind is when I had to quest in the cave under Manaforge Ara... figured "demons = cake walk" until the first fight. When they dropped 3+ mana bombs on me and drained all of my mana because I couldn't kill fast enough. There was no close-to-death times, but having to drink after EVERY fight was annoying...

Or in the cave under Manaforge Ultris; where the respawn rate is insane... and drove me nuts because I couldn't take 5 steps without fighting MOBs that had horrible drop tables >< nothing like spending 1hr+ to do a low-income quest -.-

An advantage though, I could solo alot of the elite quests (except the 5 mans).

...prot questing is NOT as fun as ret questing IMO.
