Noob Clicker Learning to KeybindFollow

#1 Feb 13 2008 at 8:49 AM Rating: Decent
Hey guys. I just got a new Tarantula keyboard and Deathadder mouse so I will procrastinate no longer! I have been putting off keybinding until now, saying that it wasn't important, but after a duel where I couldn't mutilate a guy without stunning him (normally I just run through and turn), and learning that this person was a keybinder, I'm in!

So basically, I'm trying to decide whether to bind all my bars to my mouse or all to my keyboard. If I use the mouse way it'll be no problem since we already have a wonderful sticky. If I use the keyboard I suppose I'll be able to google something up.

So now for the questions.
-I have been using the default WoW UI with a few addons I need (auctioneer, Stunwatch, Energywatch, etc.) for forever. Are there any UIs that I could switch to that would be ideal for my switch, or should I just learn the keys by heart before switching UIs?

-Any way to make the transition easier? Should I unbind my keyboard movement buttons that aren't strafe (yes I'm a keyboard turning noob too >.>)?

-In your opinion, should I go for binding it all to my keyboard or all to my mouse.

Thanks for any and all help!

I find that Bongos is great for bindings. You can bind things in your spellbook to a key, rather than the action bar slot, which makes a difference if you move stuff around.

Binding A and D from turn to strafe will actually serve two purposes. It will force you to use your mouse or relocate your hand to the arrow keys (which you can also unbind), and it will free up Q and E for more bindings.

I prefer Eon's method of putting everything on the mouse wheel. I don't have any of the super mice, just a standard two button with a wheel and I have everything I need with the roll of a finger. Mine does have a few miles on it, so the wheel is getting a little loose and I have found that I roll down accidentally instead of up, which eviscerates instead of mutilates...big difference, but it doesn't happen often if I am paying attention.

I have seen a few people who use 1-6 with shift and alt variants, but I feel that would hinder you. I have 1-6 bound to various things along with almost all the keys around WASD and I make full use of the mouse wheel up, down, click and the shift/alt variants of them.

Ahhh, I got it. So you bind stuff to your keyboard and your mouse. Sounds good. Any idea what key I should bind auto run to?

Not sure...I only use it when I am traveling for long periods of time and am too lazy to hold both mouse buttons. If you are using it in combat I would say bind it to something close to the WASD keys to make it readily accessible. These are my bindings, which I posted in the "Keybindings advise" thread that is still on the front page:

Quote:
Stealth

MW Click - Distract
MW Up - Cheap Shot
MW Down - Sap
Shift MW UP - Garrote
Shift MW Down - Ambush

Out of Stealth

MW Click - Blind
MW Up - Mutilate
MW Down - Eviscerate
Shift MW UP - Gouge
Shift MW Down - Kidney Shot
Alt MW Up - Sinister Strike
Alt MW Down - Rupture

1 - Stealth
2- Bandage
3 - Vanish
4 - Evasion
5 - Sprint
6 - Thistle Tea
Q - Deadly Throw (Shift Q for throw)
E - Slice and Dice
T - Trinket (with Shift and Alt for my other two)
F - Feint
H - Health Pot
V - Kick
C - Cloak of Shadows
X - Expose Armor
Z - Envenom

Good luck and don't give up when you find yourself continuously looking at the sky or the top of your character's head. Mouse turning will become easier and you will wonder how you ever did it the other way.

Edit: Also, with Bongos, you can bind to your spell book instead of the bar, but bar one is going to do whats called "paging" based on stealth and out of stealth. In my bindings you can see that scroll up is both Mutilate and Cheap Shot. You will need to bind the bar, not the spells to accomplish this.

I switched to Key binding about a week ago and I absolutely love it. My pvp skills have increased tremendously and I actually enjoy grinding honor alot more now.

Then I came to the realization that about 90% of WoW players dont really keybind.. I went around asking almost everyone i dueled and they were all clickers and thought key binding was way too hard.

It seems on the forums most of us keybind but only about 5% of WoW gamers even look at forums. Just my insight that only the players who are willing to learn more and are more interested in the game besides just playing it are the ones who usually key bind or take that extra step to be better.

I disagree with your percentages - everyone in my guild or on my vent server is a keybinder. Certainly more than 50% of rogues in the game are keybinders as well, just from looking at playstyles in BG.

Roll a druid. Then no one will notice you keyboard turning, cause they all do it. Then they go FC.

To ask a question to Trophy's post...

If I wanted to try out those keybindings, is there a simple way to back up current keybingdings so I dont have to go thru and reassign all my keys to my current bindings if I wanted to switch back?

I like the idea behind the mouse keybinds but I may have to revert back for raids while I'm getting used to the new bindings for the first couple weeks.

Haven't tried, but you can check out the "Profiles" options for Bongos, should be under the WowAce config drop menu. You may be able to set up your current settings, save them as a profile, and then create a new profile with the bindings you want to try out.

I actually dont run Bongos. I'm not sure what the equivalent is, if any in my UI but I cant find anything that will back up(or do profiles) in game. I was thinking there was a file in WTF folder maybe.

Do you use a action bar addon like Bartender or Bongos, or are you using the standard Blizzard UI (dragons on bottom with additional bar on the bottom and two on the right)? If you are using Blizzards I think the information is stored in your WTF folder, so you can back that up, change what you want and if you don't like it, just drop your old one back in.

Yeah I guess your right maybe it isn't that much but I have noticed that most of the casual gamers dont really keybind.
