Arcane Build

I will soon be getting my second piece of T5 and I think I'm ready to make the change to arcane. The problem is I have never done any research into the arcane tree. I was looking for advice on the build above. This is strictly a PvE raiding build. Also, if anyone knows a good arcane mage, I would like review their talent spec.

I'm hoping that this change will help my over all damage in a raid. I'm usually in the top 4, but want to start beating out those darn shadow priests and elemental shamans. Can anyone testify to the DPS difference between Fire and Arcane?

My Profile is here if you need to look at it. I'm not wearing my normal PvE gear. MY +fire/arcane spell damage is 1030 when not spell hit capped, and about 995 when spell hit capped.

Any advice at all on build and/or spell rotation would be awesome.

Thanks

After the removal of the damage tax, the T5 set bonus no longer made Arcane Blast rotations more powerful than fire. I think Anobix either did the math on it or found the math. He should probably be by later today and can answer your question on this.

Sorry I didn't reply to this sooner, I figurd that you had already covered it there Pold (but as you hinted/mentioned) with the removal of the fire damage tax a straight 10/48/3 or 2/48/11 build outdamages the arcaneblast + scorch + am rotation. This is mainly due to the fact that the MSD was nerfed and also the lightning capacitor as well.

I remember the MSD nerf fresh in my mind, but how was the Lightning Capacitor nerfed?

made it so that additional crits only add once every 2.5 seconds I believe.

Is the Lightning Capacitor still good after the nerf in general not only for arcane spec? Better than Quag´s eye for example? I have the Icon and Quag´s eye atmo.

Sorry for derailing the thread.

Quag's eye is better than the lightning capacitor. It always has been(except for two specific build types).

Won't beat fire for raiding, but if you are just about to get 2nd piece t5 it means you are probably in a guild with progression still in tk/ssc. Arcane is viable enough to run as that spec so you dont have to respec twice a week for hydross/a'lar. I am in a similar situation, and respecced every week til got 2 pc t5, now I will stay as arcane til we are in mh, or until guild is at level that not using spells from my main spec wont hurt the raid. Fire is definately better but arcane still keeps me top 5 in dps in guild on average.

With the new mana gems, better mana regen from spec, and if you have the shadowpriest you can now throw more arcane blasts before debuff reset spells, so helps keep damage up a little more than with the old cookie cutter rotations.

The way the MSD & LC used to work (I still have em both for pvp) is that you would get an MSD proc and cast AM. This would hit every 1/2 second, and could crit thus giving you a LC charge every 1/2 second. In theory, if every AM pulse critted, you'd get a lightning bolt and be 2/3 of the way to the 2nd lighting bolt in just under 3 seconds. It was *sick* damage. It is still somewhat okay, but since the charges cannot accumulate on the LC as quick, it is not nearly as OP as it used to be, but I still kill people with a Lightning bolt now and again, and that's fun.

Keep in mind, I only PvP on my horde mage anymore, thus my spec is not nearly as optimal for raids and such.

Several problems with arcane:
- The server/client handles AB damage and mana costs weirdly. Spells sometimes cost more but have a slower cast than they should when casting 2 or more in a row because of how the debuff is applied. This means is does less damage than it should.
- TLC is still the best trinket for Arcane mages, worth about the same as a straight +100dmg in terms of how much it increases your damage. The closest trinkets are the Illidan trinket, the ZA trinket, and DM:Crusade.
- Arcane is competitive with Fire until you hit Hyjal/BT. It is not vastly superior, but on par. One of the biggest advantages is being able to only have 76 hit rating and still be effectively capped, instead of 164. Beyond T5, 0/47/11+3 has better scaling and pulls ahead again.
