490 defense then what?Follow

Hi fellow warriors.

I'm a bit confused about something. I have 490 defense and was wondering if stacking more dodge/parry/block rating would have an effect at this point.

If yes; could you,in theory, with enough def/dodge/parry gear achieve a maximum level of total avoidance?

I checked the stickies, wiki etc... but couldn't find an answer. If someone got nice little formula to explain this all I would really appreciate.

Thanks in advance

you still shouldn't shun away from +defense gear.

Avoidance gear usually has less HP than max stam prot gear, making it slightly less effective for new content tanking.

It's really not possibly to reach 100% avoidance, nor would you want to. This would make you permanently rage starved. There are several articles that give you passing crushing blow immunity though, maybe that was what you were thinking about?

For tanking, effective hp [through stam and armor] will be your best bet post 490 defense, except for your trash tanking/farmed content set which should be more geared towards high SBV values. There are very few fights where avoidance tanks are better, the only one I can think of from the top of my head is really prince... although I do recall there being more through ssc/tk/bt/mh... just can't recall.

You make a good point about avoidance vs rage. What I was looking for is not total avoidance but was just wondering if I add some more dodge/parry either through defense rating or gear with agility/dodge/parry, will it make any difference or if at 490 you are basically capped in your avoidance.

you can continue increasing your avoidance after 490 defense through both - getting more defense, and also through getting pure avoidance stats.

Gemming for it may not be the best idea though, getting it through drops is usually much better.

There's a sticky called "Defense and Mitigation" on the Paladin forums that might answer some questions you have.

The general recommendation after hitting the 490 defense is to reach a combined Dodge/Parry of 30% for starting Kara. I've also heard that 40% Dodge/Parry is a good idea for some of the higher content though still not required. I have never seen any write-up on maximizing mitigation to the extreme that you are curious about. It would be interesting to experiment with.

My Dodge/Parry is currently around 36% and I am noticing the rage starvation problems in some of the heroics now. That extra mitigation is nice in some of the Kara fights and I'm told by the healers that I am easier to heal for than some of the other guild tanks. Prince is still a pain though I think I'm starting to get a handle on how to get through Phase 2 of that fight.

Dont know how much help this might be, but its an interesting idea (for those of us into theory) and speaks (at least tangentially) to the OP's question. This guy isnt looking at 100% pure avoidance (Parry + Dodge), but pushing both Crits and Crushing Blows off the table w/o needing Sheild Block (hits >100% Avoidance + Block).

I doubt one could reach 100% straight avoidance, that'd be madness.

I had this same question too when i got around 490 defense. Here are some things that I noticed as I have been progressing and don't directly answer you question but will give you something to think about as you are gearing up. (My warrior's name is Beatitude)

1. Rage = threat
You need to be able to generate rage if you want to be able to hold a target. The ways a prot warrior generates most of this is through getting hit. Although high dodge+parry is great for not taking damage, they don't generate rage. Sometimes you need to take a hit or two to get the rage in necessary to establish and maintain . This is why I am learning to like block rating and block value more and more. This allows you to mitigate some damage while still being able to get rage. Be careful how much dodge and parry you stack, it may lead to some threat problems.

2. Stamina, Stamina, Stamina
You can never have enough HP. If you have the choice between throwing a 12stam gem into a slot or a 6+stam + something else to get a small dodge or block bonus, go for the 12 stam. I don't know if this holds into BT or MH, but it sure as helps in instances/raids before those at that level.

3. 490 def is a minimum
I usually see most warriors with between 500 and 520 defense. Defense is a nice stat in itself because it raises dodge, parry and block. Over 520 defense there seems to be diminishing benefits, which is why warriors tend to go toward +hit rating, expertise, and attack power. Which brings up another point.

4. Try not to miss
After awhile you might notice you miss bosses way too much. This can be supplemented by hit rating, expertise, and attack power.

I stole a lot of that from guides I read about being a warrior, but it is worth mentioning. If you got something else to add or just want to make fun of me, that is cool too.

Thanks for all the answers. It's been really helpful. The sticky in the pally forum had the formulas I was looking for.

I knew I could count on the alla warrior's community. Rate-up for all!

Kinghong you just answered all my questions with your link. Thank you so much!

Very good read for a protection warrior wondering what they should look for at 490 defense.

rate-up!
