I've seen them mentioned in a few threads here yet cant seem to find the answer so thought I'd post my question here.

On the subject of Gems I believe that the general view is that the following Gems are ideal for us Mages, I have also placed them in order of priority:

Great Dawnstone (+8Hit)
Veiled Noble Topaz (+4 hit, +5 dmg)
Runed Living Ruby (+8 dmg)
Potent Noble Topaz (+4 Crit, +5 dmg) - When hit capped

Now this all well and good if you're looking at Yellow and Red sockets yet what about blue sockets such as those on the Spellfire/Spellstrike sets?

So far I've gone for the Stormy Star of Elune, which isnt the best Blue Gem I know.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Ignore them. Red and yellow gems are pretty much all that you want to put into sockets. Set bonuses are, on balance, weak compared to the potential damage and hit gain from the gems themselves.

^^^

incase you were not aware, you do not need to match sockets to socket color.

Occasionally, you get a socket bonus where it's worth putting in a Blue gem. Glowing Nightseye ftw in those cases.

For example I plan to use the Aldor headpiece with a Chaotic Skyfire Diamond in it, which requires 2 blue gems. I plan to use the purple gem "something something", spell damage and stamina.

are you kidding me? so I can put a Yellow Gem in a Blue socket? Really? why didnt I know this? Are you saying that you dont get the socket bonus if you dont match the socket colours, but if you donr care you can socket what you like?

Man I'm a slow learner...

Thats just how it goes, you just need to calculate what is your best benefit. Aint it great that you have so many different possibilities? "Can I get a hell yeah?"

QFT. or a meta-requirement to meet.

You mention an area Poldaran that we've missed in the list of ideal Gems, Metagems. I see a that for PvP perhaps the ones to go for would be the Powerful Earthstorm or the Mystical Skyfire Diamond, yet what about for PvE and Raids?

Insightful Earthstorm Diamond seems good if you have mana problems perhaps, yet for those who don't would you say Chaotic Skyfire Diamond?

Actually, Turicus was the one who mentioned Metas.

Personally, I love me the Chaotic Skyfire.

Do the two colour gems still count towards a meta requirement of a certain number? Was never certain.

OMG! I never knew this! So you only lose the socket bonus if you don't match the colours with the sockets, but you can still socket the gems!??

I've always matched the colours - didn't think there was any other way...

Yep. So a Green counts as both a blue and a yellow. Et cetera.

While we are on the subject of gems, just hit 70 on my mage a couple days ago and went ahead and ponied up the gold for the spellstrike hood and pants http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?source=live;witem=24262 and http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?source=live;witem=24266

Just put some cheap gems in it in the meantime until I can figure out which good ones to put in. Blue quality cut gems are going for around 40g on my server, and just want to put in whatever is the best for the long run. I will be power leveling my tailoring up this weekend and will be working on the spellfire set.

So can the experts save me a little gold and tell me what gems would be best?
Thanks

What do you intend to do? Raid? 5 mans/heroics?

If you want to do Kara get as close as you can to hit cap (164 with full elemental precision) which means either great dawnstone or veiled noble topaz.

Yep. And for heroics, try to hang on to a set of lower hit rating gear(around 70 or so) because a lot of that hit goes to waste there.
