New lvl 70 mage, have some assorted Q'sFollow

#1 Feb 10 2008 at 10:34 PM Rating: Good
Hey all, I am a fresh lvl 70 now on my mage and uber excited :D

So ive got a whole mix up of Q's here, hopefully you guys can provide some insight.

To start, the following will be my objectives : PvE/Heroics/Bi-weekly raiding (casual at best...Prob wont see past gruuls/ZA). I will be mixing in PvP for fun, mostly BG's though, I never cared for arena much.

The build I plan to use : http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=ozZEgGzfcIReRt0h

The gear : Ive been a busy little bee, and had my full spellfire set farmed and ready to go by the time i hit 70. I've also acquired the S1 shoulders, and have enough honor for another undecided pce. I will now also begin grinding mats for the spellstrike gear, and the rep to get the stormcaller (link : http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=29155;source=live

thats the jist of it...Now, the Q's =)

1) Assuming ive got full spellfire, with the above posted link, and 2 pcs of S1 gear, is this sufficient to start up karazhan?

2)Is there a "minimum" required amount of stats to start in kara? (ie, warriors need 490 defense, this much shield block, that much armor etc..) If not 'required', what about "recommendable" as far as mana/+dmg/+hit+mp5?

3)Until I have that spellstrike gear, I dont see myself as having a whole lot of +spell hit. Is it really THAT big of a deal at the above said raids I was planning to do?

4) For what I am planning to do with my mage, I believe the above posted link to be a decent one. Heavy fire for PvE dps, with some of the PvP talents in there (blazing speed, dragons breath, impact). Does anyone have any other recommendable build? (fire would be prefered, but im up for trying an arcane build as well. I checked out the FAQ, but im looking for a more personalized opinion/experience)

5) Ive heard after a certain level of gear, arcane > fire as far as dps goes. Yay or Nay? If yay, what lvl of +dmg would this be true?

6) Spell Rotations. I havent gotten a chance to take my new 70 gear out for a whirl yet, but previously, on longer fights I would go OOM rather fast. With the above posted gear, will mana be as big of an issue now? Alot of people talk about "spell rotation" to combat the mana issue. What is a high dps, yet mana efficient spell rotation that can help keep me pumpin for a while (outside of gems/pots, those will obviously been used at the end of the line)?

Thank you for any suggestions, comments or insight you can provide, it is appreciated very much

Probably. As long as the rest of your gear doesn't just completely blow.

Minimum, no. I'd recommend at least say 600 +dmg and maybe 70 +hit, though.

+hit is the absolute biggest thing you can do to increase damage until it's capped. Gem for it. Enchant for it.

Arcane being better than fire is no longer possible. It used to be with certain insane synergy between a trinket, a meta gem, and arcane missiles, and there was strength in AB rotations with 2pc T5. Then they nerfed the gem and the trinket and removed the damage tax on fireballs. So Arcane lost that ability.

Fireball x 8 Scorch x 1. If mana is a real issue, you really ought to have Arcane Concentration. Otherwise, try for a shadow priest in your group, or at least a shaman(Resto or Elemental). Even a moonkin would help in a pinch(more crits means more MoE mana returns).

Don't use pots and gems at the end of the line. Gem as soon as you can without wasting it. Same with pots, if it's a fight you know you'll go OOM on. Finding a time to evocate that works for you is useful too. If all this fails to help, consider getting a Mark of Defiance. It's pretty decent at helping your mana regen.

Dragon's Breath is indeed awesome, and has uses both in PvP and PvE. Impact is a talent I really wish I could have 5/5. But I can't without making my raid DPS suffer. Blazing speed is also decent, but the talent points might be useful elsewhere in maximizing one's mana efficiency(heading to Arcane Concentration) or damage(heading to Icy Veins). I'm also not really a fan of Imp Fireblast. It's ok and all, but you'd need to drop the points to head towards a talent that may benefit you more.

I'd recommend either boots or bracers, personally. Both are actually fairly decent for PvE and PvP. Granted, they're not part of the set, but all the set slots except the shoulders will probably have spellfire and spellstrike on em.

Thank you Poldaran! :D

I couldnt have asked for a more detailed, well written post to answer my questions.

Once again, very much appreciated.
