So whats all this I hear that Pally's are becoming more and more of a viable tank? This is great news to me, because I would MUCH rather be End Game Tanking than healing...what do you guys have to say about pally's tanking and end game?

There are something like 15 threads on the first 2 pages that deal with protection spec or paladin tanking.

It's not bad, you can do some stuff you can't do some stuff. A lot of that is covered in those threads.

Let us know if you have any specific questions.

Paladins are considered the pre-eminent 5-man tank because they allow for groups with little to no CC to get through an instance.

With a recent reworking of the paladin protection tree paladins can actually get in the same neighborhood as warrios for total health.

Only real problem for pally tanks is those caster type mobs where a warrior's spell reflect comes in handy. Holding threat as a paladin tank isnt really a problem once you get some spell damage going.

Its a bit more work to get uncrushable (needed for end game tanking especially raiding) and HPs compared to a warrior but not impossible.

As far as I know all all bosses up to Illidan have been tanked by Paladin tanks. Not sure about ZA though but its still early days.

I've tanked all of ZA. It's easy.

Some instances like Shattered Halls are made for pally tanks.

I tanked it on my prot pally and I was able to keep almost all of the mobs on me except when the lock decided to go into nuke mode.

The only thing that gives me a bit of trouble is when you have an NPC mind controlled , sometimes the taunt we have does not pull them off the priest that had them MC but i usually try to have my stun available to stop them so I can get the aggro.

I have 1 green bracer and 1 green boots and 2 green rings on my pally and I have 11.3K HP unbuffed and 513 Def rating and I have no issues tanking.

I havent done anything above regular 5 mans, but...

I have to say ive had some extremely good experiences so far with paladin tanking. I've lasted a lot longer than i expected. My gear is a hodgepodge of crap i picked up on the way to 70 and a few items i bought when i decided to spec prot, so its OK, but not spectacular.

My groups have been all sorts of qualities and almost entirely all pugs. Generally zero communication is needed. I just run into a bunch of dudes and tank them all. Healers never run low on mana, people rarely even get hit besides me...

And its just so incredibly easy. As i was saying in another thread, i have tanked many things as a warrior and the complexity of warrior multimob tanking is pretty high. Pally's just gotta consecrate and holy shield /dance. The easier it is, the less likely people are gonna get messed up and the smoother everything goes.

So far im a big fan and the tanking ability suits the content i will be doing.

Here is the link to my pally tank

I know my spell damage is a bit low but I really dont want to drop the +30int on my sword as it would lower my mana too much.

I know I need to get some enchants on bracers but waiting till i get better ones than my greens.

I still keep a full healing set in my bag (and I mean a full set) that has 2 T4 and 4 other purples so I can still have 1080 BH and 10K mana with my current spec.

30 Int ='s 450 mana. That is an extrmely low amount. It will not make or break your mana pool.

Go for the 40 spell damage enchant.

Hmm. Okay I will try that then. My gf's toon is an enchanter so it should not be to hard to get it.

I can't view armories on this computer, but I'm curious as to how much mana you do have.

Everything looks pretty good, but you desperately need more spell damage.
#18 Feb 11 2008 at 10:29 AM Rating: Decent
Okay. I will get the spell damage enchant and see about getting another one on another item as well or re-gem for it as i have 513 def and can drop it a bit for spell damage.

Tks.

Actually your spell damage isn't "too" bad. The weapon enchant should be sufficient enough to help you out at your current gear level. As for mana, I only have 5853 mana, and I'm in full Kara/Heroic Badge epics (minus shield, have Sha'tar one, damn you Nightbane ...). Think it was barely above 5k, if that, when starting Kara and it was enough for me.

Okay I have bumped up my spell damage with the enchant and also re-gemmed for a bit more avoidance with some +8 Dodge gems. Def is 503 now. Also got the mana up a bit with a +12 int enchant to bracers.

I tanked OH and BM last night with a Holy priest, Mage , and two Shadow Priests. Talked them into not using any CC and we rocked both instances.

At BM the guy did not even get hit , was at 100% the whole time and I kept most of the adds near me so the mage could be covered by the healer a bit easier.

Man I can't wait to get some better gear to replace these two greens I have and then see where things are at.

I so want to be uncrittable AND uncrushable. Getting close on the uncrushable part.

Somebody linked this site on the general forums i believe:

http://maintankadin.failsafedesign.com/viewtopic.php?t=4844

Helped me quite a bit and that is guaranteed gear. No praying on drops. Will help you replace your greens. Armory wasnt showing gear for me for some reason, but if you need a belt you can get a decent one from the Arcatraz Key quest.

Yea i registerd on the forum yesterday :) I use it alot too.

Yea I need to run Arc to get that drop and I need 3 more badges to get the Libram for the extra 3.1% avoidance as well so it looks like some Heroic UB for the badges then Arc for the belt and then BEM for trying to get the Crystalforged sword possibly.

Woot!!!

my roomate has been killing him consistantly recently. after watching the whole thing in action. . . im actually pretty embarrased at how easy it actually is.

you dont even have to use a focus shard if you know what your doing. hopefully i can pull it off also. i have a bunch saved up.

practice makes perfect i guess. a part of me doesnt want to blow all my runes on failures, another part of me wants to get a bunch of tries so i at least know what im doing. I get to mid phase 2 and die a horrible death. FORTUNATELY i have recently learned that i wasnt using the drain life ability in phase 2 and obviously mucked myself because of that.

+12 Stamina > +12 Intellect, just to keep in mind for your next set of bracers ;) Honestly, let your mana pool be an after thought. If you're constantly at 0 mana you either a) need to rethink your spell rotation or b) totally outgear whatever you are tanking and thus aren't taking enough damage, possibly both.

As for the of topic Shartuul: owns me every time too, so I finally gave up :S Anyone know a good "play by play" if you will of the fight?
