I've recently picked up and dusted off a 26 mage I've had sitting in my account for about a year. I glanced over the mage FAQ about good and bad talents but like many FAQs it seems to be appropriated toward endgame 70 builds. I of course need to level and was wondering if frost is decent to level with? I've been using fire just because thats what I was previously spec'd into and it worked well. Fire seemed to be "the" way to go at the time but after picking my mage back up I want to know if I'll be seriously hampered or slowed down by leveling in frost instead?

Here is this toons armory:
http://armory.worldofwarcraft.com/character-talents.xml?r=Andorhal&n=Varenus

And since armory has been a trainwreck for the last 6 months or so here is a wowhead build also: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=oZxgMzM

Here is what I was thinking along the lines of a frost for my level.
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=oZZVVGzo

How does that look? And where should I be at talent wise say at level 40?

That looks pretty good to me (The one you were thinking). I would get Elemental Precision as you will need to avoid any type of resists.

Max out shatter soon, along with permafrost.

something like this at 40:

50:

http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=oZZVAGfobxobot

and after that you can kinda pick and choose where you want to put more and more points

Do I need to spec into Elemental early or can I come back to it after shatter?

up to you really, if you notice you keep getting resisted it would be a good one to get, if not, get shatter.

Similar question...well about frost leveling anyways.

It seems everything i read is about frost spec and pvp, well what if you just wanna do instances and raids? Still go frost or could i fire for more dps?

Also, if anyone one has seen my previous posts, i'm pretty new...former FFXI player recently switched over. Would i be able to get just as good or better gear from PvE raids and instances or would i need to go into arena to get that gladiator w/e gears i see ppl wearing all the time?

It'd be great for someone to school me on this, b/c of my newbness to the game, i dont take in and understand all the i read about it b/c most of it is all end game discussions.

If you want to PvP get PvP gear (from BGs/Arenas) if you want to raid/instance get PvE gear (drops/crafted items for PvE)

Ok, that's a given, but is there like any gear that i should start planning for and building for that i could do anything in?

This is where my 2 years from ffxi comes in and interferes with WoW, on there i had the best gear that took countless hours of camping and questing with linkshells(guilds).

I want THE best gear on here as well, and if that splits into 2 categories, PvE and PvP...then understood. Just twice the work i'll need to put in.

If you came from FFXI you should be prepared for this. I remember my Ninja had something like 4 Gear swap Macro's. One for Ninjutsu's, one for Weaponskills, one for Provoke, and one for Tanking. lol

Honestly, what I'd suggest is hoard all your Honor points until 70 and BG as much as you can on your way there. That way, once you do hit 70, you'll have enough Honor stocked for a solid PVP starter set and also if you're smart with your Gold while leveling, a little farming will net you your FSW or Spellfire set depending on your spec.

Around Mid-60's I'd suggest trying to level in SMV if possible. This way you can start semi-farming Fire or Water Primals while you grind. I suggest SMV because it's the most Elemental-rich area outside of the Elemental Plateau so it doesn't require a flying mount to begin farming for your crafted sets.

YES! thank you for some helpful advice, it's always cool to see someone else from ffxi that understands what where i'm coming from. Things are so different here, i'm still getting used to everything....
on ffxi it was like "Ok this is the job i want, and these are the armors i'll want for later" It was all very much the same gear set ups with everyone of a certain job, here in WoW everyone has different things and i'm all confuzzled what i should work for lol.

Hi. I would like ask also couple questions and don't want to start a new threat =)

I'm almost 69 now and have allready been to murmur (almost took him down) with my guild. Our group was lacking outoff dps that time. I'm waiting for those shoes from that quest and here is where my quesions start:

My mage is looking like this now and spec is frost at the moment.
Causamortis armory link

I really think I might take her over to fire side when I hit 70. Also have been gaining some honor so I will have at least that staff from pvp reward.

For warriors there is a great site where they can find items they need for tanking in kara but haven't been able to find similar for mages. I don't want to spend gold or time looking for wrong items so can someone suggest somekind of raiding set? Something to start with.

Should I start with spellfire and some pvp rewards (If I go fire) and if so, what will the rest of gear be? Thanks for all helpers and also those who will laugh at me =D

you can use the beta search feature that goes through and lists where you want to search for drops and in what attribute you want to rank them in. That or using Wowhead's search/filtering system works pretty well also.

Would this order of talents be efficient for building a frost mage that is doing quests rather than AEing?

10-14 5/5 Improved Frostbolt
15-17 3/3 Frostbite
18-22 5/5 Ice Shards
23-24 2/2 Improved Frost Nova
25-29 5/5 Shatter
30-32 3/3 Piercing Ice
33-34 2/3 Frost Channeling
35-39 5/5 Winter's Chill
40-44 5/5 Arctic Winds
45-49 5/5 Empowered Frostbolt
50 1/1 Cold Snap
51 1/1 Ice Barrier
52-53 2/2 Arcane Sublety
54-56 3/5 Arcane Focus
57-61 5/5 Arcane Concentration
62-64 3/3 Arcane Impact
65-66 5/5 Arcane Focus
67-69 3/3 Arcane Medidation
70 1/2 Improved Mana Shield

What do you think?

Well I have done a bit editing to Khal's post of another build. I have only taken to lvl 58. To leave it up to them to decide stay frost or add them to arcane and we all know that order.

10-11 2/2 Frost Warding
12-14 3/3 Elemental Precision
15-19 5/5 Ice Shards
20-21 2/2 Improved Frost Nova
22 1/1 Icy Viens
23-25 3/3 Piercing Ice
26-30 5/5 Shatter
31 1/1 Cold Snap
32-33 2/2 Arctic Reach
34 1/1 Improved Blizzard / or Cone of Cold (Don't matter)
35-39 5/5 Winter's Chill
40 1/1 Ice Barrier
41-44 4/5 Arctic Winds
45-49 5/5 Empowered Frostbolt
50 1/1 Water Elemental
51 5/5 Arctic Winds
52-53 2/2 Ice Floes
54-58 Finish Cone of Cold and Blizzard to 3/3 each.

Pluses of doing the above you get your Ice barrier at 40 not 50 as mentioned. Cable of doing some AoE when needed. Also getting you water elemental out at required 50 for added support when Questing.

12 Points left can easily be used to get 3 points of frost channeling if you wish, before switching to arcane
