Switching to Resto for a bitFollow

I'm considering switching to healer spec for a little while (don't want to stay because I really enjoy the dps/ot/support position).

I don't want to do heroics yet because I need to improve my gear first.

Anyways, I want to know if going all the way to tree form for regular instances is needed or not? I heard that some groups need/prefer having Healing Touch used and that the hot's won't keep up...but that may have been for heroics and not regular instances. I'm still researching on what talents to take, but knowing if I should go all the way to tree form or not should help. :)

Thanks ahead of time for your input. :)

in my experience as a tank, unless my restokin has 1700+ healing bonus, he may have a bit of trouble keeping me up if i get an unlucky string of hits when i'm fighting some hard-hitting mobs in heroics, ie the destroyers in mech that do a knockdown and then an arcane-buffed attack, the coilfang defenders in SP, some of the orcs in ramps. however, i also notice that my restokins don't use much (if any) mana to keep me up, unless the pull was botched/cc was broken early/group is taking damage.

My druid had been full resto (11/0/50) for almost six months with around +1600 (starting around +1200) healing gear. I found myself hardly ever using tree form (currently short try out on Moonkin built).

In most instances, even heriocs and raids up to including Kara, rolling lifebloom combined with a rejuv/regrowth depending on the fight can keep up as long as the tank is properly geared. For spike damage the swiftmend and the NS HT combo (in emergency) should be enough to keep outheal the incoming damage.

As I almost never ran out of mana, tree form was not used (only the mana discount on healing spells would be useful as my gear was mostly mp5 based not spirit based so the extra +healing bonus from spirit in tree form was neglectable).

At certain points I even respecced to eliminate tree form in favor of a more PVP / Arena built (8/11/42), skipping most bonusses to HT and maximising HoT's and keeping swiftmend and NS. It still worked fine. Though I have to admit that the patrolling guard on the stairs in heroic Mech kept me on the edge if he got lucky. In my opinion tree form will not be the key there (as HT can not be used anyway), it is mostly having enough +healing and a good combo of your HoT's (the beginning being most difficult as it takes time to get enough HoT's ticking)

I am resto for few weeks now. I have 1400 healing bonus and in normal instance, I usually stay in Tree form. The mana reduction on the spells is nice, and I favor Spirit instead of MP5.

I payed attention yesterday when in Kara, on Prince, I kept the main tank topped off using HOTs without any problem, 3x lifebloom + regrowth. The only time I used Healing Touch was on some pull where the puller was out of sight, NS + HT to be sure to not loose the tank =)

In heroics (even though you said you were not going there yet), I have not much experiences. I healed Arc, 75% of the time I was in Tree form. Except when there is a dmg spike where I use Healing Touch. In heroics, I do guild run and most of them are geared for SSC, so it's not that hard to keep alive.

My build is 61 points in Resto. Take everything related to healing =)
