Quick lock-noob talent question (already read the guides)Follow

#1 Feb 08 2008 at 6:21 AM Rating: Decent
Well, this is my build.

My lock is L16, and thus far I've only placed points into Improved Corruption, to max it. I have two spare points. I'm not sure whether I ought to go for Demonic Embrace or Shadowburn first. Which one should I go for? Or, should I even go for Shadowburn at all?

5/5 Suppression is overkill. Really you don't NEED any. Though when you get to Kara 2-3 points may be needed before you hit the Spell Hit Cap fom gear. But really not needed. Instead you could grab 1 point in Shadow Embrace. I was informed it still does add to Drain Life through Soul Siphon. From there you can decide if you want the points in Malediction for Raid Utility or in Imp HS or Imp Imp. Not really a decision for later though seeinbg as your 16.

As for where to put your points now, really depends on your playstlye a bit. If your Drain Tanking ot Drain Hunting though your gonna wanna get the talents you need for those to work well from Affliction ASAP. Personally, I didn't move out of the Affliction tree until I had UA, I was gonna stop at IHoT, but figure I was only a point away.

No matter your playstyle, Dark Pact is very important. Unless your doing a lot of BGs or something and REALLY need the Sta, I would get down to those awesome talents first. If you get something else somewhere else, that's more levels you gotta wait until you get those.

I agree that you should work your way up Affliction first.

Shadowburn is a great tool for certain PVP situations, and every once in a while works its way into PVE as well, but it is not going to increase your efficiency at all. As for Demonic Embrace, in my humble opinion it isn't worth the points until later in the game, where that 15% increased Stamina actually makes a big difference -- when you have like 60STA, adding 8 more isn't worth the trade you'd be making by taking points out of Affliction, especially for the SPI redux.

Id try something like this out, where a 41-point base in Affliction is all you need. You're looking at 2/5 Suppression until you reach your Hitcap, then move those points into Drain Soul for the Agro Redux.

With 4 extra swing points you can modify the build to your needs. Big Raids get Malediction, Small Raids/Familiar 5-Mans/Heroics you can drop some points out of Embrace and work with Devastation and Destructive Reach (again for Agro Redux.) PVP, maybe you wanna pick up Improved Health Stone and CoA or Aftermath.

Past the skeletal structure of this Affliction build, it is really up to your playstyle and what you intend to do that will guide where you put your points.

Suppression = filler points. I have 3 points in it on my level 44 lock and that was only to get him further down the tree. (The extra -resist is nice when fighting orange or red mobs, but 3 is really the most you will ever need).

Demonic embrace is inviting, but I agree that you shouldn't take it too early. I started investing in it at level 34 simply so I would have the 5 points by the time I hit 39 for BG purposes. By that point I had a bit more stamina but I probably would have waited til much later to pick it up if I didn't PvP so much.

My advice is to work your way to Syphon Life as quickly as possible before worrying about anything else. That's just my opinion though, but I think Syphon Life can make a worl of difference when it comes to survivability while leveling.

Just my thoughts.

Depends on what you're doing.
From a raiders point of view it's a talent that makes up for lacking gear at the start of your raiding career.

But yeah, you can use it as a filler when leveling, although that's not needed either.
