Casual Duo Levelling with MageFollow

So, I'm leveling a Paladin alongside my fiancee's mage. I'm specced retribution right now (I've been told that levels the fastest), however I am currently out-DPSing her mage at level 22. She is a neophyte when it comes to playing video games and so I'm looking to find ways to give her greater reward for the time that she does invest in playing with me.

Would it behoove me to spec protection and reduce my personal (and our overall) DPS so that she can shine a bit more at this point? I feel that if she can do some crazy numbers and feels like she is doing very well that she'll want to play more (which is good for me as I enjoy playing this toon).

Any advice would be welcomed. Thanks.

sounds like you should go to mage forms and ask them what she is doing wrong or what she can improve on. fire is gonna be her highest dps but highest mana per damage if i remember right sorry only took my mage into 20's and didnt read too much on them.

no point lowering over all dps just because your doing more than her. will slow you down. as long as you live no point in it really. even if you cant hold agro she can FN or other cc stuff to get away some.

Yep, I'd ask in the mage forums - some smart folks in there. That said maybe Poldy will stop by here.

Remember too that ret paladins put out some nifty damage early on, IIRC my mage took a bit to really really get powerful. Oh and I leveled her as fire - it's not as mana-intensive as people seem to think. Actually I found it to be rather efficient.

It could be that she's using long cast spells (like fireball) and not getting in the licks before you down it. If things are dropping fast I'll usually stick with scorch and fire blast or other short cast time spells.

One thing I do want to say though is... the last thing you want to do is get an early mage overly concerned about damage meters. Unless she likes corpse runs.

I actually leveled as Ret along-side a mage. I destroyed her in the damage charts up until around level 40-50. Then she started catching up as she discovered more about her class, and eventually you'll hit that DPS plateau, while hers will just skyrocket. So don't really worry about it.

It could be fun to change to prot but for the reason that you can both AoE. If she gives you a litttttle headstart on some blocks and a consecrate she can kick with with whatever AoE spell she likes. Most of all that is FUN to do (and it feels kind of..... cool). As an extra: her gameplay becomes even easier and she might get a lot more fun out of it!

Edit: some lines changed/added.

Thank you much for all of your advice.

My first toon was a mage and he's been 70 for quite some time. I've soured on playing him as I am very much a PvE player but my work schedule does not afford me the opportunity to raid. So, I know a bit about playing my mage. It's just been a year since he's been level 20. Also, I have many years of gaming experience and she doesn't. But she is getting better each time we play.

That being said, I have respecced prot and hopefully we'll get a chance to try out our duoing skills. I am looking forward to AoEing in about 10 levels and melting many faces at once.
