Instance Etiquette – Conflicting Goals?Follow

In instances the mana users are expected to be ready to go ASAP – this means drinking. On larger pulls (aka either big pulls (5 to 6) at 1 time or Patrols agro a normal pull) I will usually go OOM. I’m not using Evoke, maybe a Gem, but I try to keep evoke next to my “Oh **** button”

On regular pulls I drink after (Let’s say a regular pull takes me to 70% or better Mana)… So I drink after every fight. My job is to make instances faster – and CC.

However – the Party’s only loot greens or better – the guy who loots the body gets the cloth. I want the cloth, but that conflicts with the goal to go fast – because as soon as the fight ends – I need to drink.

So what’s the standard? I’ve become accustom to the “Hey can I need this” and the standards of who can/can not do that… But what about the grey items that I really do need. I’m trying to LVL tailoring – and I might come out of an instance with 1 stack of cloth. (Ok, maybe 1 and change) but still… The rogue who’s going to AH or make bandages has 4 stacks now…

So what’s the deal – do I run around and loot – then drink up – Thus slowing the overall instance run – OR do I do as I’m currently doing – which is drink after a fight and live with that aspect of rolling mage?

If your party leader is using the normal group loot option then there should be a number of bodies that only you can loot for greys/cloth. If you are using some sort of free-for-all looting system I'd suggest asking the leader to change it back to group loot. This should give you a fair chance on greys/cloth with the only thing you'd be missing out on is loot that others leave on bodies (as chances are another player will loot those while you're drinking).

As for drinking in the first place, generally it's ok to start fights on less than full mana, you could maybe go for two normal pulls before drinking. Or, do your looting and then sit down to drink while the tank pulls (a bit harder if you need to cc something) this lets you get some mana back without delaying the group and enables the tank to build up some threat.

Most people don't like others looting during combat, but if it's only a body you can loot (as we can assume your other party members would loot it if they could) then you could loot that while the tank pulls and builds up some threat.

If the loot option is set to "group loot" than everyone gets their own corpse to loot when their turn comes up in rotation. Therefore you will get 1 out of every 5 loots (if you have a 5-man group).

Using this system the only time someone else may loot your corpse is when it has just money or something which the group will roll on.

In other words...

-If the body has 30s on it...anyone may loot it since the money is split anyway.
-If the body has 30s and a green item...anyone may loot since the money is split and the item is rolled for.
-If the body has 30s, a green item, and 3 silk cloths...only you can loot it since the silk cloth is yours. Once you loot the money is divided and the green rolled for.

Make sure that the leader has set it to "group loot" in normal instances so that you get your share. If you are running with a different loot setting for raids or whatever, be sure to work something out with your group so that you get your share. It also helps to mention to your group that you wouldn't mind taking any extra cloth that they don't need. That works a lot.

To answer your question: Mana up as you see fit...your corpse will be there with "group loot" activated. If you are using a different loot method..be more vocal about your needs.

when running heroics, i tend to keep going until i see that one or more of my casters is OOM, or the healer is below 3k mana. i usually don't have problems with casters complaining about the relatively fast pace (45-60 minute heroic SP and heroic mech), though i did have complaints once from a dps whoremage who i had to taunt mobs off at the start of every pull because the tool couldn't wait til i established threat before he let a pyro loose. unfortunately for him, he didn't top dps despite his showboating, but i did keep him alive (most of the time).

Thanks for the quick replies - I guess I'm just watching 4/5 of the loots and seeing a lot of cloth not going my way. Ohh well.

I do start fights prior to full mana, but as a general rule I create 60 to 70 waters and about 50 bread prior to NON-Heroic (I'm only 50s)... I usually will give away a few stacks, but post fights - I always drink. It's sort of a no-brainer to me. The other guys are looting, marking mobs, etc... Even if I only get 5-6 seconds... It's free to make them prior to instance...

Also - I read in one mage post that the person drank all the time, so I figured it was a good thing to do.

Thanks

To the OP - 2 options for your cloth:

1) Before you start the instance, tell the group you are trying to level tailoring, and you would appreciate any extra cloth people have at the end of the run. They may need it for First Aid, so you may or may not be lucky.

2) Wait until the end of the instance, and ask people for any extra cloth they have. It will already be stacked up in their bags, so it makes for a quick trade (as opposed to trading Qty = 3 cloth after every encounter).

Other than that, you can always farm. Lvl 50 - are you looking for runecloth? Go to WPL and AoE the undead. You can get tons of runecloth there.

To address the slowing of a run by drinking...I think that was answered by everyone else.

drink to full

(tank starts next pull)

loot

(tank is building aggro)

sheep & dps

don't use spells with low mana efficiency (like fire blast). this will make the fights a couple seconds longer, drain more of the healers mana (requiring them to drink... and tanks won't pull without them), and save you mana so you won't have to drink as long between pulls.
