does not matter.
when in animal form you use your "paws" to attack.

AVOID weapons with a "chance on hit" type stats or enchantments.

weapon skills will not level while in form.

Weapon Skills "Will" level when in animal form. Cant tell you how many times I have seen the level up indication when in cat form. I could be wrong and I only leveled my wep in between form changes, but I am almost positive that it will level at some small %. I could be wrong as I am a relative Noob to WOW (Main is a 60 Balance/Resto Druid) but I seriously remember being shocked a few times when leveling weps while in Cat form.

My 2 Cents...

I heard weapon skill can affect hit, but I cannot confirm this.

Your "feral weapon skill" is always maxxed while you level. There are no +weapon skill items in the game anymore as they were all replaced with expertise.

Your mace, dagger, staff skill is not very important at all. If you want to level it, thats fine, but I don't bother. Unless you are a moonkin and need to hit to get mana back.

What you are experiencing is a level up while swinging the weapon between shifts. At that time, you do swing your weapon and therefore can skill up.

No they won't. My Druid has attacked millions of times with his paws and never once gotten a skill up from it.

Not any more now that we switch directly between forms - a very, very small price to pay :)

You don't directly switch between forms, you go to caster form then into your new form. All blizzard did was add a UI option to automatically /cancelform when you cast a spell (including shapeshifting). I can't log in right now, but I think you can test this by trying to shift from bear to cat while under the GCD.

I can confirm that this is the case, and I love it because I have Outfitter set up to equip my Staff of Natural Fury when I pop to caster even if I'm shifting from bear to bear so that I benefit from the reduced mana cost of the shift. : )

The point is that we now switch so fast with a single click that you don't end up swinging your weapon when you shift to-n-thru caster form.

Bear, Dire Bear, and Cat forms all have a Feral Weapon Skill rating that is [Your Level] times 5.

Upon hitting 70, you will have 350 Feral Weapon Skill. Items specific to these druids often have an equip effect that boosts Feral Weapon Rating at no extra item budget.

The DPS of weapons do not matter to these feral druids. The chance-on-hit effects of enchantments and rare/epic weapons do not occur. Only stats and attributes matter on your weapons.

Raglu, no items have +feral weapon skill anymore. It has all been changed to expertise instead which decreases your chance to be parried or dodged.
