Spellsurge - some numbersFollow

I thought I'd sit down and think about this for a while - it's a slow day at work.

Spellsurge has a 15% proc rate, according to the tooltip. Some people say they think it's more but for the sake of simplicity, let's assume that it's 15%.

Flash of Light takes 1.5 seconds to cast so if you're spamming FoL, you're going to get a proc every 10 seconds. Add in the cooldown and you're getting the procs every 40 seconds.

You get 100 mana in the surge, so that's 100 mana every 40 seconds, so effectively putting spellsurge on your weapon adds 12.5 mana per 5 seconds while casting.

That's what you (and every caster in your group) gets.

yo m8 the only caster i realy play is a lock so dont need to worry bout mp5, but its 12.5 mp5 worth it over the +81 healing?

ofc i reckon this depends on your other mp5?

Spellsurge is not a solo enchant. It comes into play when an entire group(or 4 healers when paired with a shadow priest) has it. 12.5 mp5 is a good approximation(11.5 is closer, I think). 12.5 for each person with it for the entire group. Meaning 25 mp5 for 2 healers, 37.5 for 3, and 50 for 4.

It adds up. A single one is nothing. But 4-5 is just spectacular, and easily worth more than 5 people each only having 81 +healing.

/Agree - better when you have others in the group with it than solo. Some guilds have their healers have 2 sets of weapons - one with spellsurge, other +heal.

Its got an internal cooldown of about 50 seconds to a minute, depending who you ask and is only good when 3 or more people in a party have it. Any less and you would be better off with a personal enchant.

I asked my pally class leader if he had considered forming a spellsurge group for raids. He said they had considered it, but was convinced that Blizzard was going to "fix" (read, nerf) spellsurge somehow, so it wasn't worth it.

Has anyone seen any rumors that might affirm this?

They haven't mentioned a nerf, but it's a powerful mechanic and people are always afraid that those will get nerfed. I think it should be safe for a long time to come, but I may have just jinxed it right there.

It's only a powerful mechanic when people are working together, so I don't really see why they'd nerf it. The players are doing a fine job of nerfing themselves with it.

Something you can do it get a main weapon enchanted with +81healing, and then a similar weapon (probably with slightly inferior stats) will Spellsurge. Then get a mod that times internal cooldowns based on when the last proc happened. When the cooldown is up, switch weapons *during a cast,* and likewise switch back while the cooldown is ticking. It means every 15 seconds tops or so every minute, you're using a slightly inferior weapon but giving the group back 50mp5 if you're with a caster group.

Yes that mod is really good, but its only viable if you're talking about pre-kara and kara level gear. I promise you, you're not going to be able to have two lightfathom sceptors or two hammers of attonement. It just won't happen.

You don't need 2 Lightfatghom Scepters.

When you upgrade to the Lightfathom Scepter, put +81 healing on it, and reenchant your Shard of the Virtuous with Spellsurge.

Note he said "slightly inferior" weapon.

Ugh..... the macro gear swapping reminds me of the rubbish that was FFXI min/maxing and my flashing little RDM.

I use it, as did the rest of the main raid healers.

About 2-3 of our raids 7 healers decided not to use it. They still get a SP, however within the course of 2 weeks it became clear how powerful spellsurge is. The spellsurge group was dominating the charts despite the best efforts of the other healers.

It is to the point where a 5/5 T5 pally with the vashj mace and Hyjal gear is having to go balls out to come close to me who has lost every T5 roll and is only 2/5 t5 with the Maiden mace.
