New to mages, wondering on good LevelingTalent buildsFollow

Yeah, so i've been playing rogue and shamans mostly, and decided it would be nice to roll a mage, but i'm wondering, whats a good build starting from level 10? should i go frost, arcane, fire, or a mix? the arcane missiles talent, for getting rid of interruption looks nice, but i'm not sure that it's worth it. anyone have any tips for mostly solo Leveling?

Also, any strategies for going about this? so far i start off with a frostbolt, arcane missiles, then i wand the rest of it, but that won't work forever i'm sure.

a lot of this has been answered numerous times and can also be found in 'The Greatest Mage Post Ever' and in the 'Mage FAQ' at the top. Once you read those and have any questions about them, feel free to shoot them our way.

"Read the sticky" seconded.

Playing a mage is like real life: the key is to find out what you are, and be that. Coming from other classes, you'll find you have a lot more flexibility as a mage. There is no one leveling build that you must use til 60 or everyone will laugh at you. Every spec plays differently, but each is viable for leveling.

That was a really pleasant surprise for me personally. I started out frost because I was concerned about survivability, wasn't enjoying it at all, was about to give up on the class, tried out fire just to see, and started having huge amounts of fun. I can't stop cackling when Ignite does its thing and the mob runs around on fire. Hee. My mage is my 2nd favorite character now.

That's not an endorsement of fire at all. The point is you really need to read through the talents, think about the differing playstyles, maybe try a respec or two along the way, and just choose what appeals to you the most.

Like stated above, you should read the sticky. Here's a general answer:

All specs are ok. There is no Terrible spec. It's just how efficient you want to be. If you have a lvl 10, your main goal is leveling - thus PVE. The standard for PVE is:
1. Frost
2. Fire
3. Arcane

The reason for this is mana efficiency and survivability. All mages get Ice Block, but Frost as a spec has many more survivability buffs that help a lot. Frost is also the most efficient way to use mana. Fire is a "Kill them Quick" spec - the point of Fire is to hit for so much damage, that the mob gets to you and is nearly dead. Frost is more of a kiting and stratigic fight.... Arcane is generally not preferred as a leveling spec because it's just so mana intense. You'll be resting/drinking after 1 or 2 fights.

Personally - I like fire. I'd hazard to guess that 3 out of 4 mages use frost to lvl.

I started as fire, switched to frost, back to fire, back to frost.....now I'm broke...lol (I should've started 2 mages instead of one). They are both really fun, and have their special points. You can level either one really fast. Read the FAQs - and pick whatever you want.

Fire = takes single mob down VERY VERY fast.
Frost = take all mobs down fast, and get a pet.

The Arcane Missile talent is something every new mage looks at. However, it is deceiving. As a mage, you will learn to "not get hit". Thus, making that talent fairly useless is most situations.

For solo leveling - a tip would be to use polymorph as your opening spell on mobs that wander (a.k.a. walk around). The key to surviving is to have your first damage spell hit at max distance. Then, you can get off more damage spells before the mob reaches you. Polymorph will keep any wandering mobs at max distance (i.e. they don't wander closer to you while you are winding up your spell).

Hope that helps. Have fun with your mage.

hmm, thanks to both of you, i'll keep that in mind, and after looking at the faq, i decided to go frost.

Didn't we decide a while back that you actually could do this most the way through? : P
