I am considering using the "Raid Spec Xtreme" talent build (from the Greatest Mage Post Ever sticky), but I have a question about it:

If I've choose 5/5 Empowered Fireball, is it still worthwhile to mix Arcane Blast into my spell rotation or should I use fire spells only? I'll be spending most of my time in 5mans and karazhan.

Good way to check this out:

http://www.warcrafter.net/sandbox

Click Specify at the top right of the screen, put in your realm and character name, click Go, and it will import your information from the Armory and give you DPS numbers for your main nukes with your gear and spec. If you want to play with talents, click Sandbox at the top right of the screen and then redistribute points to whatever you want, then click Build Stats. It will update all the DPS numbers. I personally love that tool, it's really useful when trying to theorycraft to an audience.

If you're talking about the 10/48/3 spec (I haven't checked the thread) Fireball is going to do loads more DPS than Arcane Blast does, even with the shorter casting timer of AB.

for strictly spell rotations/dps factors, I recommend this site:

http://www.manoutoftime.org/staticpages/index.php/tcom

you can import your armory and pick your build (or another build that you are considering [all cookie cutters]) and see what dps best fits your gear and how to attain it and improve what you are currently doing.

casting any arcane or frost spells with a deep fire build is a waste of dps. unless the mob is fire immune (like al'ar).

edit: great tool, rate-up. it does not calculate the fire crit bonus for fire mages correctly (it says 150%, should be 210% including ignite). i can't report to the author, because i cannot post on the US forums as a EU player.

Well, technically it's really only 150%, and Ignite is a separate DoT that triggers off of it. If you put Spell Power on, then you get Ignites based off of 175% crits.

Arcane Blast spam is still higher DPS than Fireball, but it's so mana intensive that for all practical purposes your best bet is to stick with Fireball.

Warcrafter calculates fire crits correctly, at least I was last I checked, I got within about 10dps of the program hand-doing the math.

yes, you are naturally correct, but if it's not in the crit multiplier, where is this damage calculated? maybe i'm just missing something on the spreadsheet. ot it's not shown explicitly but is in the dps.

also, my spellhit and crit chances are lower than what my character screen shows ingame. 4 spellhit rating and 0.5% crit missing. talents are calculated correctly, so it's the base crit that's off. i would report to the author, but the EU link goes back to the builder and i can't post on US forums.
