Pet kills always this way?Follow

When my pet kills a mob and I don't actually damage it, I am unable to loot it and am not even sure I get exp from it. Has it always been this way? I would think that our pets should be almost an extension of the hunter so don't know why we are unable to loot things soloed by our pets. The pets are affected by party buffs like Aspect of the Pack and even by buffs from other PT members.

Has it always been this way?

It usually isn't a big deal since I will usually manage to get in a hit here or there but there are times when I am running through a lower level instance where the pet can 1 shot stuff or when I am fighting one thing while I have the pet fight the other and I don't actually get to damage it.

Just curious because I've been told by others that they were under the impression that I should be able to loot bodies of things killed by my pets.

I know its been that way for the last 2 1/2 years so I assume its always been that way. Just remember to shoot it once if you're busy doing something else.

It's been like that for as far as I can remember. The reason for it is probably what you're describing; you shouldn't be able to put your pet on aggressive, stroll behind it and clear an entire low-level instance.

Prevents afk leveling. If you don't actually do any damage to the mob, you don't get xp or loot.

Yep, it’s always been that way. This is why, when I take a friend’s alt through a low level instance, I equip two fast 1H weapons. That way, should I need to kill something my pet is on I can whack it one real quick. Arrows work too, but I often find myself in melee when dealing with low level mobs so it just works better for me.

Yeah, I end up in melee a lot when escorting a lowbie through instances. I typically use a fire trap to 'tag' the mobs and avoid losing access to any loot. I'll have to try the dual wield trick, thanks.

I guess I hadn't thought about the AFK leveling or leaving your pet on aggressive and letting it do it's thing.

Would be nice if your pet could solo stuff and you can loot it but I can see how people might take advantage of it.

Thanks

When they are way below my level, I will drop an explosive trap and shoot the one farthest from me (though sometimes I one shot him ; ;) and have him come running bringing all his friends and let the trap damage them. If I think I have them all damaged at least a little I'll switch my pet to agro and let him get a lot of them.

It stinks when you forget to tag a mob before your pet gets it, but its not hard to farm without really paying attention anyways. I've farmed for the Azure whelpling by simply attaching an "/assist "pet name /cast "growl rank whatever" to the standard steady shot macro and setting your pet on aggressive. All you have to do is move around 3 - 5 mins and loot after the pet's list of targets are exhasted.
