Ok, so I am bored at work here on this thunderstormy day and need something to read up. My main is my rogue and he’s done everything up to Gruul, so my lock is quickly becoming my new main. I highly enjoy warlock and I just hit 42 leveling affliction. This is where the “rate my lock” part comes in. I’ve read all the stickies and done some research online, and I think I’m doing ok. So here’s my armory. Is there anything that you guys think I could do to better myself as a lock on his way quickly to endgame?

Some points:
Weapon: I have the staff instead of the orb because my luck was REALLY bad on droprates in SM, so no Hypno blade for me.

Pants: My main has over 3k gold with nothing better to spend it on. 100g takes like 30 minutes to make.

My 5 points in demo: I like to PvP and the extra stamina seems to really help me play better in PvE.

Lack of Dest points: I don’t use Shadowbolt other than Nightfall procs right now.

I like to drain hunt. I like to solo elites. I like to solo adds in 5-mans. I use VW mostly for solo and Felhunter for PvP (sometimes Succy). I like to look good :)

Ok, anyway, like I said, bored at work and tired of reading/responding to all the AV threads on the main boards. So if you’r bored too, then let loose some replies :)

Pretty good...not too many locks with +damage at that level. Can't think of any big changes I would make other than maybe find more Stamina.

um...8.9/10

You could definatly use more HP.

Granted your HP is definatly up there for a clothie, with some of the items you got right now I could see it jumping quite a bit if you actually looked for HP items.

+Shadow is good for draining but as Affliction in general it's not nearly as good as STA at that level. Drain Hunting restricts you to 1 monster at a time, and restricts your Damage output as you hold back enormous potential to allow your VW to control agro.

If you really like Drain Hunting then get 3 into VW, although I wouldn't recommend this. The fact that you don't have Dark Pact yet leads me to think you're unfamiliar with how truely badass that Talent is. It could be worth it to you to switch up your entire gameplan at this point, although you should stick to what you want to do.

I'd drop that Shoulder Piece and that Staff, get some good Sta items to fill it in. I'd drop Demonic Embrace for now, since your new STA will help cover that, and reach down Affliction more into Dark Pact. Pull out your Imp and put him on Passive with Phase Shift on and Dark Pact him when your mana gets low.

Drain Tank at first, and as you get good start Fear juggling. Eventually you'll be able to do fear chains involving multiple monsters (4-5, even more in ideal situations) which boosts your effective DPS *MUCH* higher than just adding some spell damage.

Drain Hunting is a very relaxing gamestyle for me though. I can definatly see wanting to use it to play as an Alt. I wouldn't take my suggestions unless your prepared for a bit more engaging gameplay =)

Forgive me, I should have posted drain tanking, not hunting. My bad there. My typical strategy envolves:

1. Send in Pet. Imediately Syphon Life (Just LTed from last fight). Let one more taunt go by.
2. Curse, Corruption. Mob at 3/4 health.
3. Life Tap some mana back.
4. Immolate next mob. Syphon, Curse, Corruption, Drain Life.
5. Profit.
6. Life Tap.
7. Repeat step 1.

If they are non-aggresive mobs, then I do 3 at a time, fear-dotting the third. It's fast and I have virtually no downtime (I eat/drink maybe once every 20 minutes).

First, not losing the staff. Worked too damn hard for that :)

I sense little fondness of my shoulders, so I will mark those down as something to possibly change. I almost traded them for some of the eagle shoulders the other day (even looked at of stamina), but I didn't get them. While I have no problem paying 30-40g for a decent blue (and no prob paying 90g for a spellthread to put on blue pants that will last a while), I do have issues with paying 20g+ for greens. Most of the level 30+ warlock greens are 15g or more, and the shoulders of the eagle and stamina are up over 20g right now. So my choices were pretty much intellect, spirit, or shadow wrath. You know what I chose. But I am browsing Wow-Loot.com for good shoulders in the 40-50 bracket.

As for Dark Pact, you are correct in my lack of experience with it. I will have it in a few levels so no respecs for me right now. Can't wait to play with it.

Rate ups!

That's weak that low lvl greens are selling so high...I won't even pay more than 10gold for a lvl 69 green (for my shaman).

Well. being a 70 rogue, I have the gold, I just don't want to spend that much on a green. he problem is that every other bored 70 also has the gold... and they are willing to spend that on their alts.

40g for the Necro pants and 100g for the spellthread. Yeah, I was fine with that. Those pants have lasted me over 10 levels and will probably last me another 8 at least.

But 22g for Lunar Mantle of the Eagle? Yeah, GTFO. I replace greens ever 3-4 levels, so um no.

EDIT: Edited for letters doing funky things. Damn you Mac OS9! (I'm still trying to convince my boss we need to upgrade >.>)

Sometimes its not about gold, if you find pleasure in spending it why not?
My hunter had her daggers enchanted with +15 agi since level 35 I think, and I kept doing that every 2-3 levels. She had that 40ish epic bow that went for like 300g on my server then.
It was fun.

I still dont mind getting best enchants or gems for any of my toon. I think I blow up like 500g just on trying to see if she gets more benefit from +agi or +ap gems.
I still managed to get my both toons epic flying mounts and all craftables that I could find crafters for. I could afford stuff like Belt of Blasting on my lock right now, but I cant find anyone to make it yet.

But to be honest, you can level your lock practically naked. Once you hit OL most quest rewards will be better than stuff you can buy in AH.
And after that comes a time there is nothing you can buy anymore. In like a month at this pace even badges wont have much use anymore for me.

So its really about what you find fun. You can quest your way to 70 without running any instance for 0.005% drop and do perfectly fine. Or you can try get some SM or whatever dungeon drop until entire instance goes gray to you.
But none can tell you if its worth spending money on some overpriced item you will outlevel in 3 days.... that is entirely your call.
