Forgive me for the long post.

I took a trip into BRD last night with my 65 Prot warrior to craft a Dark Iron gun for my 50ish hunter. I convinced my brother to run his 70 Arms warrior with me to help with whatever clearing was needed. He agreed since he wanted to pick up the XXL jumper cables. We both ran in our dps gear since it was a lower instance and only put on shields when necessary for the bigger groups.

Here is me:

I was using two of the Footman's Longsword though...got that other sword afterwards. I was in berserker stance whenever possible and was pretty much just spamming devastate and whirlwind.

This is him:

He started out DW'ing that axe and a similar dps cudgel which was a little faster. He then switched to http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=27524;source=live

As you can see nothing about our gear or specs is anything special. We are both average players of roughly equal skill. But I ended up beating him on the damage meters by almost 10%!!! He switched from DW to the 2-H mace about halfway through and closed the gap a little...but not much. We were using similar tactics and I didn't see him doing anything stupid or "wrong". He played just how I would have played if I were him.

QUESTIONS: Please don't take this as me bragging...I really don't care about the meters. I'm just curious as to how this could have happened. I know there are hundreds of variables here..but I wonder if anyone else has encountered this. Was it just because I was doing more consistent damage throughout the instance compared to his spiky 2-H damage? If that is the case than 2-H Arms dps seems like a really bad choice for instance runs. Or was it more likely one of those other variables entirely?

He's MS spec and he started out DW:ing? That's your answer right there... he's a noob. Also, he's specced hybrid. That's something I personally hate, since I believe it just gimps you at everything.

He didn't have Imp. Slam, so I guess he didn't use that much while DW:ing? Phail. Also, a Devastate spamming warrior in fury gear can dish out more damage than you might think. I topped several mages and rogues at Shade of Aran.

I don't know why you were outdamaging him. I'm no expert on Warrior DPS and know a lot more about gearing and talents for tanking.

That being said, I can't figure why your friend would have Sword Specialization and Two-handed Weapon Specialization and dual-wield an axe and a mace and use a 2-handed mace as a back up. Those are basically wasted talent points with the weapons he has right now. I think he also had points into Imp Overpower which is good against mobs his level or higher but I'm thinking that Overpower won't be available as much while fighting mobs 10+ levels below him. I don't think those things would be enough to throw his DPS so far off as to be beaten by a prot Warrior 5 levels lower than him though. You might just be better at choosing which skills to spam to get the maximum DPS out of your character.

I was just browsing and came up on this and decided to chime in with 2c.

Maybe he was BS'n around and decided to get on his game when he saw you were winning.

I went to BRD with some lower friends (70Rogue) and was spamming Sinister Strike with my 2 Daggers until I finished eating (~45min). When one of my Firemage buddies (lvl 67) wanted to tell me he was crushing me on the meters...well let's just say I decided to pay attention.

It could be simple as that. I wouldn't worry too much I don't think.

tries to pop Vanish to leave the forum but it's bugged so OP,White Crit, MS, Execute...death...corpse run to rogue forum

Yeah I mentioned that to him when I noticed how he was doing on the meter. He started to close the gap a little bit with his 2-H. But not as much as I expected. Don't get me wrong...he doesn't normally DW when it matters. He just pulls it out to ***** around with.

Yeah, he is still doing some normal quests in outlands. He plans on switching to full prot in order to tank. He picked up the bare minimum in Prot to be able to tank non-heriocs. He actually has done a good job at tanking so far..so I can't complain. It's much better than when he was tanking Auch Crypts as Arms/Fury..that was unpleasant. :-)

This constantly surprises me. I'm dishing out some pretty decent damage by spamming devastate these days. But I shouldn't be able to beat out an arms warrior five levels above me. He isn't the best warrior out there and his spec could definitely use some work. But he is competant.

He was using a 2-H sword when he spec'd that way...hasn't respecced since getting the mace. I've mentioned this a couple of times too :-)

Good point

I was pushing hard to get as much damage out as humanly possible since we were taking on some pretty large groups with no healer (dangerous sometimes even if they are all low lvls). Maybe he wasn't pushing so hard.

It happens. I ***** around when I run lower lvl instances. Now that I'm prot, I still deal a decent amount of damage. If you whirlwind and you hit 4 mobs most of the time and he's only hitting one, maybe 2, you will do a lot more.

How I top the damage meters when I was running with my lvl 70 mage friend through low lvl instances ? I would charge in and try to kill as many as possible and she would pick up the stragglers xD

ill use my blackblade of shahram when i run lowbies thru instances. its cheaper to repair than deep thunder, and it has the coolest proc in game. it also makes my dps suck comparatively, but thats ok, because an 8-yard 6s aoe stun > all.
