Thoughts on rolling a mageFollow

#1 Feb 05 2008 at 5:52 AM Rating: Decent
Hello everyone. I have recently been thinking about making a mage as an alt. I am currently playing a warrior, rogue, and a hunter and I would like a change in game play. By mostly being able to nuke and such very effectivley. I have played a mage before the expansion to level 40. Do you guys think that this would be an okay switch in game play for me? My guild mates have also told me that a mage is difficult to level now, even as a frosty. Thanks in advance for any feedback and suggestions.

Idea behind the mage is obviously a limited amount of damage one can do at an accelerated rate compaired to other classes.

Problem with this is, though, that this really doesn't happen till quite a bit later in the game - meaning a Mage can do about the same damage as a Melee but with a limit of mana. It does sort of suck. That aside, though, you'll see ALOT more control with a Mage than you had even with your Rogue. A lot of CC options, ways to handle yourself defensively and offensively, and with a good spec you'll find you can push out some Rogue-ish damage in a pinch.

Put all of this with the fact that you can start fights off from a decent distance and you'll find yourself grinding Yellows/Oranges who never touch you...

I think saying it's "hard" to level a Mage is false - just maybe takes some sitting and drinking every couple of monsters.

I don't see what's hard about leveling a mage. If you're not serious about PVP mages are a fun class. If you don't mind grinding lots of gold at 70 you can gear yourself up to an amazing state even before stepping into a raid (many tailored items).

The state of mage PVP annoys me right now, but that's a different topic for a different day.

You have some classes who are viable at PVE DPS though, especially a raiding BM hunter. Then again I rerolled 2 DPS classes after having a warlock, so what do I know ^^

You want to level slowly - try a Paladin... :)

A mage is easy to level, and easy to level fast. Even as a frosty. Once you learn how to "not get hit", then you cruise through mobs really fast. Add AoE, and you can take out grinding quests in no time at all. I think mages are probably one of the fastest classes to level.

From your previous classes - it will be an adjustment. But since you've played multiple classes, I will assume that you are flexible enough to pick it up quickly. You'll have fun as a mage.

If you leveled a warrior a mage will be a cakewalk. Less drinking than eating/bandaging, plus faster killing, teleports and aoe.
