tanking gem questionFollow

#1 Feb 05 2008 at 4:31 AM Rating: Decent
Since the only decent red cut that I can find is the +8 dodge which usually goes for right around 60g on my server; way to much for me at this point since most of my gear from what I hear will be replaced after a few runs through kara. So unless someone can link me an uncommon red cut that gives a bonus to either defense or avoidance in some way, I think i'll just stick in a few +9 stamina and call it good.

And to those who will say that if I'm going to gem for stamina I should do the star of elune cuts, those on my server go for right around 65g and once again fall into the realm of way to much money to be blowing on gear that I plan on replacing after only a few kara runs.

So thx for any input.

The red ones have some parry rating ones. Otherwise, not really any avoidance on reds, purples and orange. Unless I missed some.

Edit: Oh, and pony up for the Stars of Elune. 65g is about 45 minutes of doing dailies. It's not that expensive.

cost is something that comes along with being a tank. when you are gearing for raids you need to be aware that you are not gearing for your success, you are gearing for the raid's success. as a tank you have a baseline that you need to be at that cannot be substituted nor neglected. this is different from other roles where you can have a less than optimal talent spec or keep a piece ungemmed/unenchanted til you see fit.

bottom line, if you come unprepared you will cause wipes.

To echo what others said, you really have to be prepared to spend money. You can make so much money in outlands now without trying too hard it's not even funny. I'm really not one to talk, I haven't seen my gold shoot over 400 since I bought my flying mount, but that's cause every time I get enough gold to get an upgrade to my gear I spend it on that. Right now the majority of my gold has been going towards cards, getting enchants, gemming with the best gems I can get (except those purple +sta gems, I aint shilling out 600g for 3 more sta), buying BS plans, making said BS plans, etc...

tankin' aint cheap.

If I didn't spend so much money on good quality gems, re-enchanting new items, smithing mats, etc as a tank ... hell if I was anything but a tank period ... could have bought my epic flyer by now. Yea, you gotta be prepared to shell out some dough if you want to tank.

/sigh yea was kind of afraid of that. So then would I be better off gemming with the http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=24036 to help with my avoidance stats overall or go with the elune for stamna. My health right now stands at around 11k without the +150 health enchant to chest.

Echoing what's been said before in other threads: gear for avoidance, gem for stamina. Having said that though, if you need some more avoidance use http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=24062;source=live. Other than that, go ahead and load up on Solid Stars unless you have a set bonus worth gemming for (or if you're like me and always gem for the bonuses).

Maulgak is right, gem for stamina. If you need to go for a socket bonus though (I usually do when the socket bonus is stamina and skip it otherwise), you can use what he reccommended for yellow slots and Shifting Nightseye for the red slots.

The Shifting is perfectly fine, but you really don't get much "bang for your buck" with Agility. I personally choose http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=24056;source=live which will certainly go a further in helping your threat, but offers nothing for your mitigation. Personal choice really as neither by itself is going to make or break you.

Make sure to look at the socket bonus before you go chasing it. Str, int, MP5, and block are almost never worth it. Stam almost always is. Parry and Dodge depend on the sockets.

More specifically, jam 2 solid stars in worthless socket bonuses. For Stam bonuses, find a way to maximize the avoidance/stam per socket. The worst case is 2 red sockets because they lack stam/avoidance gems and that would be another time to jam 2 solid stars into it. Parry and Dodge bonuses are worth getting if 1 socket is blue and the other either Blue or Yellow, since you can pop in 1 solid star and then an avoidance/stam gem into the yellow slot. Red slots are generally meh.

As for my own personal socket choices. Red sockets get 8 Dodge, Yellow get 8 Defense, Blue get 12 Stam. I have a couple epic gems that are avoidance/stam though for 2 of my 3 red slots and I'm only rocking 2 yellow gems, too.
