Given the fact that Stormstrike is an attack with "both weapons" it would make more sense to get dual wield first IMO.

Besides that Dual wield will give a significant boost in DPS output, where as Stormstrike minus a second weapon is basically just an extra melee attack that lowers nature resistance.

I dont know why someone would ask this question, seeing as how you get get stormstrike 1 level after dual weild..so it doesnt really matter what one you get first except Stormstrike attacks with both weapons..So only a fraction of the damage will be done with without a second weapon.

I suggest getting stormstrike first.
If you are DW then you'll need Stormstrike to do decent damage.
If you get Stormstrike first Then DW next, you'll have 1 Level of still using your beefy 2h and getting extra big attacks from SS.
Edit:
@DD: It only says attacks with both weapons cause most people using it will be DW.
It doesn't mean that you need to be weilding 2 weapons in order to use the attack.

Grab Stormstrike first. With a 2 hander the damage of one extra attack is signifigant enough. Plus the 20% extra nature damage is much better than its sounds. You dps will sky rocket because of this.

Oh god get Stormstrike first, wy? it means if you normaly attack 3 times in 10 seconds with a 2h you get another attack or about a 25% increase in dmg (zomg thats a bit)

Daul wield believe it or not will suck when you first get it, how much gear at that level has a good amount of hit? I would not use 2 weapons until level 44, when you at least have 6% more hit from improvements.

Even then, I can not understand why anyone would want to DW very often at lower levels, to be honest it seems like a waste to me, when you dual wield without gear, you will see many miss miss miss... Besides, at such low levels we can more or less destroy most enemies in just a couple attacks with a good 1h weapon and a nice WF... maybe i am just too old school, but at lower levels I tend to like burst damage so stuff dies too fast for it to be a problem.

If you do decide to DW, please get weapons with matching speed and they need to be as slow as possible (without sacrificing too much dps), why you might ask, weapons with matching speeds make flurry work better, and generally the slower a weapon the higher the top end damage, not to mention WF has that dreaded cool down still.

I math'ed wrong it is about 30% increase in physical dmg (which is not totaly accurate it really depends on weapon speed) and this still doesn't factor in that all of your Earth Shocks will now hit for 20% more dmg.

lol blew my opinion out of the water...I'll have to get a nice 2h and see how my burst dmg does.

For the record, my shamman dinged 40 last night, I got stormstrike and....OH MY GOD! I have seen the light.

I have two Wirt's third legs for when I dual wield but SS was hitting harder on my 3.8 speed, lvl 32 two-handed green mace than my blue one-hander. And it was hitting damn hard, one-shotting yellow mobs when WF procced and I ESed right after. So I can't imagine that going dual-wield first would have been better. I am so looking forward to 44.

lots of good answers here, but what i did on my shammy was looked at available 2h weapons vs available DW-able weapons, then based my decision on that.

the weapon upgrades i had in the offing for my shammy were at level 41 and 43 for the OH and MH respectively, while on the other hand (<.<) the 2h i was using was quite good (bonebiter axe) and available now. no sense spending money on crappy green DW weapons when ive got good a good blue set waiting at 43, so i snagged SS first.

in essence, dont get dual wield until youve got weapons that make dual wielding worth it.

I was surprised at some of the simply bad advice at the beginning of this thread. All Stormstrike is is simply an extra attack with one or both weapons every 10 seconds, coupled with a temporary debuff that increases nature damage done to the target.

Since this disregards swing cooldowns, with a 2H weapon it's basically an extra swing, and if you are not in combat, it will initate your autoattack, giving you essentially 2 simultaneous swings. With a slow swinging 2H that is a kinda big deal!

Ultimately, your gain in DPS with Stormstrike is your average weapon damage including crits divided by 10. This is fairly easy to calculate with a theorycraft mod like Dr. Damage. If you have a good 2H this may be more than you would gain Dual-Wielding 2 1Hs (taking into account offhand penalties ofc). This isn't even including the bonus in nature damage that will grant you a few more DPS.

My recommendation is always to get Stormstrike first, then Dual-Wield, but not to Dual-Wield at all until you've got all your points in Dual-Wield Specialization. This also gives you a few levels to find 2 good and slow 1Hers, which isn't an easy task at that level anyhow.

i personally got SS first 1.) i didn't have 2 decent 1h's at the time 2.) playing a rogue previously i wasn't all that excited about dual wielding.

i did find that dual wielding with a shammy is a lot more fun than dual wielding with a rogue for wahtever reason. so many numbers flying up so man tornadoes on my screen..so many MISSES on my screen. yes, i suggest getting SS first, but remember you WILL need good weapons when dual wielding
