Shaking in my [Boots of the Protector].Follow

So, I think I'm in a bind.

I've collected all sorts of gear, for Prot, Holy and Ret. I've raided as Holy and as Ret, and tanked for Kara once.

When doing Tidewalker, we used two Pallies (One Holy, one Ret.) to tank the Murlocs. We were unable to down him. As soon as I specced Prot to tank them, we one-shotted Tidewalker. We went onto Karathress attempts, and I tanked the Hunter (Which required a Misdirect to me). My gear is decent for 5-mans, but sub-par for raids, so I was really thrashed by him.

My guild officers have been talking about getting a Prot Pally. Currently, I am Ret, and we are full on healers, so I would not be asked to go Holy. They need a reliable person to tank for them, and I believe they are going to ask me to go Prot for when we get into Hyjal, etc. It's quite a ways off, as we're not even doing Khall/Vash attempts yet, but it still requires a lot of thought.

Basically, I have no clue as to what to do. I'd love to help my guild progress by doing this, but I'm not sure if I would be HAPPY doing it. I like all the Paladin specs, but Prot the least.

Volf

Well firstly find out if that's what they want. There's no point worrying if they aren't going to ask you.

If they do ask you, and if you accept, you will need to consider the amount of work that gearing up as prot will take. You don't really indicate how good your prot set of gear is. You say you have tanked Kara, but did you get your **** kicked? Was it flawless? How close can you get to the minimum requirements listed in the sticky at the top of the board for the tank paladins to aim for? Can you ask your guild for a couple of Kara runs with the intent of you obtaining the tanking plate gear? Can you tag along as ret spec in some heroics that drop tanking upgrades?

Your post was a bit open ended and vague as to your question. Do you want specific examples of upgrades? We would need to see a link to your prot gear if so. Also, your final sentance kinda sounds like you don't really want to do prot though, so makes it hard to suggest anything. Let us know exactly what you need help with mate. =)

You have to decide which is more important, usefulness and trying to help the guild progress, or personal happiness. They are not always the same thing.

My post was namely written as a kind of rant. Wasn't asking for anything, truly. Just wanted to get it off my chest.

It's true that I would dislike going Prot for Raiding. I find that there's too much pressure to be taken while being in that spot. I don't slack when raiding, but I would feel burdeoned by the need to perform.

I actually just wrote my Guild Master on the subject, and he said not to worry in that he was not going to ask me to go Prot unless they absolutely needed it. They are going to be looking for one soon, though. I'm going to be able to raid as Ret or Holy.

My gear is decent. I can tank Kara easily, and I even tanked Maiden. I have the tier 4 Prot helm and shoulders, Vindicator's Breastplate from the Aldor and the Righteous Breastplate/Gloves for 5 mans. I use the Crystalforged Sword and Shield of Impenetrable Darkness. I sadly still ahve the Timewarden's leggings, the belt off of Moroes, the Barbed Choker of Discipline, Wind Trader's Band (Zomg a green!), and the Horseman's Signet. My rings are very pathetic. I have the Vambraces of Courage, and the Boots of the Protector. My trinkets are the Furies Deck (Can't think of the name), and the Signet of the Violet Eye, or Moroes Stopwatch.

Edit:
<-- Retlol who doesn't know how to link

Fair enough then, I am glad you aren't being forced into a role you are unhappy with. =)

Its cool that your guildmaster isn't forcing you straight up to raid as prot. However, what I tell everyone is, you pay the monthly fee to play, so play whatever you want ;)

This is the wrong attitude to have if you actually plan on really getting anywhere raiding. If I was a GM and someone said that to me, I'd go "well fine this is my monthly fee and it says I don't have to bring you to a raid." Guild need > personal preference. A guy that I joined obsidium with had always been a main tank. Every guild he was in, he MT'd. He joined obsidium and they already had a MT that had double this guy's gear (and was pretty good too), so there was absolutely no reason to have this guy MT, unless the actual MT was out of town or something. My friend first went through a personal crisis; the whole reason he made the char was to MT. Then he came to his senses, settled for OT/dps, and is now happier than he has ever been in any guild.
