I am confused about some skills that I thought the pet I tamed had, but have yet to see him use them. I tamed Echeyakee for my Orc Hunter

http://petopia.brashendeavors.net/html/mobs/mob_echeyakee.shtml

His learnable skills are bite, clawe, dash, etc but he only uses Growl. Do I have to tame another pet in order to get these special moves? I am approaching level 50 and he is the only pet I have trained at the moment. I am not a WoW noob as I have multiple 70 toons but I am new to the hunter class and don't want to come across as a noob if all I have is growl on my pet when I enter Outlands. I would rather only train one more pet so any advice on what other pet/skills to get would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

The key phrase in your post is "learnable skills". Echeyakee, when tamed, doesn't know any basic skills, but he can "learn" Bite, Claw, Dash, and Prowl.

In order to get those skills on your pet do the following:
1. Stable your current pet.
2. Lookup each skill on http://petopia.brashendeavors.net and find a pet that already knows that skill. For example, Dreadmaw Crocolisk (9-11, Durotar) already knows Bite 1 when you tame it. I'm not sure what level your pet it currently at, but you can tame Bite 3 for example and skip the lower level ones if your current pet is high enough to learn that skill level.
3. Fight with the pet you just tamed until you see the yellow text flash by on the screen that says something like "You learned a new skill (Bite 1)."
4. Abandon the temporary pet you tamed, and repeat steps 2 and 3 for each of other skills you need to learn.
5. Go get Echeyakee from the stables, open up the pet taming option in your spell book, and train Bite, Claw, Dash, and Prowl.

NOTE: You may need to respec your pet talents in order to train all the new skills you just learned. You can do this at any pet trainer for a few silver.

A couple of things to keep in mind:

First, if your pet can learn bite five, for example, there is no reason for you to tame pets to learn bite one through four. You can teach a pet a higher level skill without it ever having learned the lower level versions as long as it meets the level requirement and has enough training points.

Second, your pet can only have four active skills. Thus your cat cannot know growl, bite, claw, dash and prowl all at the same time. You’ll have to choose which four active skills you want the most. But you can have all the passive skills, such as bonuses to armor and saves, your pet has points for.

I had a thread on Cat Tanking and found using bite and claw limits the threat you get from Growl, which seems to be the best skill a pet can have to hold mobs. I would learn all the skills but use bite and not claw for your cat

Thanks for all the help guys! I took the advice and was able to train Claw and Dash with my cat pet last night. I learned Bite but didnt train it on my pet just yet. I now have Growl, Claw, Dash and Cower (Turned off unless in groups). I didnt train bite just yet - do you all recommend subbing something out so I can get Bite with this setup?

And on a side note - wow. How did I level up to 50 with just Growl. The mobs go down soooo much faster with Claw and dashing to the mob when its off cooldown. Makes for such quicker grinding.

I don't even bother keeping Cower up on my pet bar. In group situations, just make sure you turn off Growl, and you should be fine.

You might try learning prowl on your cat because it will give you a burst of damage on the first hit when your pet comes out of stealth mode. Plus, your pet can dash without breaking out of prowl to get to the mob faster.

Which skills to train on your pet is really just personal preference. Ask 20 hunters what skills they trained on their cat and you’re likely to get 20 different answers. If you’re happy with what you have then go out there and have fun.

For my personal taste, I never train cower. I’ve been playing hunters for years and I’ve yet to find a situation where I’ve needed it. That’s not to say there aren’t any situations to use it, but just not for my play style. I also refuse to train a pet in claw until I’ve gotten a focus regeneration talent. With the enhanced focus regeneration you can get in the beast mastery tree, I’ve found I can have both claw and bite trained and my pet will still growl.

I also don’t care for prowl. Some hunters love it, especially if they play a night elf and like to PvP. But again, it’s just not the way I like to play. But you might want to try it out and see if you like it.

Some people suggest cower for raid pets, so they won't ever take aggro. Most pets won't survive two hits in end game raids. I've not had much problem so far. I rez my pet a half dozen times max per run.

if your pet grabs aggro in a raid through its dps, your raid SUCKS and you will wipe anyway.
