Can i get some tips on being resto?Follow

#1 Feb 02 2008 at 12:36 PM Rating: Default
I am now resto and have some pretty good gear still doing kara but healing is great. I would like to know more about what the 5 second rule for mana is? and what ranks of healing and lesser healing wave are best to use. Any tips and advice please?

The 5 second rule means that for 5 seconds from completion of a spellcast, your mana will regen at a slower rate. When raid healing, it is very rare to find yourself outside the 5 second rule and that is why you stack MP5 so your mana regen while casting is as high as it can be.

There are 2 ways a shaman heals. He either spams Healing Wave on the MT/OT or he spams Chain Heal as a raid healer. Shamans really are better raid healers, but are fine as a MT healer if needed.

Lesser Healing Wave is by far your least mana efficient spell and should only be used in an emergency where the extra second to cast Healing Wave will end up with somebody dead.

If you are the only resto shaman in the raid, remember to pop a healing trinket and drop Wrathh of Air Totem before casting Earth Shield on the main tank before each pull.

Chain heal is the ultimate heal. Other healing classes could only wish they had something so cool, but I can do MT healing as well. Though it bothers me a pally can crit higher than me (though he was using his trinkets, I was not), even when I have like 400 more healing than him. I used to not use chain heal much, but learn to use it. Great on fights when you have rogues taking damage such as the Maiden fight in karazhan. Other fights such as Prince and Nightbane require lots of main tank healing. Esp in phase 2 of Prince, you can't even think about getting 5 seconds not casting, so you need good mp5 (though mana pool is more important). For heavy hitters like that grace of air totem (the one that raises agility by 77) helps improve the main tanks dodge by more than 2%. Helps keep him alive in Prince phase 2. In that fight you will find yourself using healing wave only. You could consider downranking, but I just used max healing wave. I'd usually pop earth shield on tank at around 61% in that fight as well, and mana tide at 30%.

But there are a decent number of boss fights you will be outside the 5 sec rule, so it is nice to have some decent spirit mana regen. But don't go for gear with spirit on it (that's just a bonus), that's mainly priest/druid gear. Go for +healing, mp5, and Intelligence (for mana pool and additional +healing). Stam is nice as well.

Keep water shield up always. Only time you may not want to is when you anticpate needing a heal on the tank in the next 1.5 secs. But generally you aren't being hit, and it's easy to keep up.

Did I mention chain heal? Yes. use it. Even if it's only healing 2 targets or pets.

You will mainly be using max rank healing wave and chain heal. For small heals I use rank 8 healing wave or lesser healing wave (when the mage aoe's). In fact, I sometimes put earth shield on the mage when we do the AOE pulls in Kara and spam lesser healing wave on mage.

I did contemplate spamming rank 2 healing wave to keep healing way up, but it doesn't seem worth it to me (even though it burns no mana). I worry about getting caught in a wimpy heal when the tank takes massive damage. Yes you can alway cancel it, but I prefer to cast max rank healing wave and cancel if I don't need it. On some fights such as Nightbane (phase 1), Prince phase 2 I like to always have a healing wave being cast. Cancel if not needed.

The rest just comes from experience. But you can check out this webpage, it has some hardcore sh*t, and cool macros. I love having nature's swiftness on a macro. I used to not use it much because I had trouble hitting 2 buttons real quick. But now I have nature's swiftness/max healing wave macro on my #4 button. Easy to hit fast.

Hmm, interesting Thrashering I do the exact opposite. I always keep the HW effect stacked with HW rank 2. But an equally important reason is that it can proc the armor buff (if your spec allows).

Downranking is another important element in Shaman healing IMO. I now use rank 10 HW instead of 12 (even in Kara) for mana effieciency. Shamans are the least mana-efieicent healing class, keep that in mind. While in my main bar I have the full rank of LHW, I have 5 and 4 in other places. (highest rank is 7 right?)

yeah I'd like to do more tinkering with downranking. I may try hw10. As for hw1 or 2, I do have the talents. I just never seem to have time to cast it. and I worry about being caught in a wimpy heal during a crucial moment, and I don't think to cancel the spell (because I mistakenly believe it's a good healing spell). I suppose the best time to cast it is before the tank pulls. but we do our pulls pretty quick, I have to be careful not to draw aggro. I like to think I learned my lesson healing the wrong time after nightbane went after me (hunter misdirect either didn't work or didn't compensate for healing aggro). I was battle rezz'd and we got the fight, just a little embarassing.

hmm. i have 1 button with lhw max rank. then hw rank 7 and rank 12 and chain rank 2 and 5. and i raid in BT/MH at the moment
but when i do instances i usualy use hw and lw only. unless Shattered Halls with a palla tank then i chain heal since i usualy have pala tank and 2 furry warriors and 1 lock.
