Complaints about pet choice?Follow

I'm coming back to WoW after about a 2 year break. I was a hunter before, and loved it so I plan to roll one again to get started. Later I plan to play a mage.

Anyway I always used Humar as a pet with my girl. He looked good next to her and I like a DPS pet.

This time I plan to play Alliance, though, and I want something that looks good next to my Draenei. I'm thinking a white bear.

My question is if any of you have experienced any problems when using a pet that's not as "mainstream" as a cat or boar. I don't want people to complain in parties because I'm using a bear. I'm not sure if this sort of mindset exists in people, but I know Hunter's take a lot of heat because many people don't know how to play them, and while I know I can out-hunter 95% of them out there, probably without a pet at all, I don't want people to avoid me in instances while I'm leveling because I don't have a cat as a pet.

If this is dumb and nobody feels this way let me know, hehe. I think the white will look good next to my blue girl :)

cant say what outers will say, i can see some people trying to "correct" you and such, but when it comes to it, it wont impact your gameplay.

id say go with what you like and be prepared to hear from a jerk or 2 on your path.

Don't worry about what other people think when your doing instances while you level. Having a bear to solo with is useful, and it won't gimp you (noticeably) in a 5-man.

But I wouldn't expect to see that bear in Karazhan or any raid beyond that.

In groups, at least bears have a focus dump (claw) even though they do fairly low DPS. If you factor in the DPS, though, as about 30% of yours, then a bear doing 90% instead of 110% base pet DPS, means you'd lose ~5.2% of your DPS by NOT going with a higher DPS pet. That's more than the bonus from 5/5 lethal shots, by comparison.

In solo, you better get bestial swiftness, because that bear is going to run slow without dash/dive. Once dash gets to the point where it's an 80% speed boost, the difference is like AotC vs. Epic Mount. It may not seem like a lot, but even 3 seconds saved per fight, if you do 30,000 fights on your way to 70 (which really isn't that much), that's 25 hours saved just on travel time.

Yes, I'm an elitist. And yes, I agree that all pets SHOULD be viable. But in all honesty, unless you REALLY want the white bear, I'd pick up something with more DPS (since armor/health doesnt matter much for your pet in raids or in PvP), a focus dump, AND a speed increase. Bear's just got 1 of the 3.

Does it matter what pet you use , The answer is nope not a lot , it all depends on what you want from the pet in damage health or armour , i have always had at least two pets from level 10 and with my main at 70 have tried every pet family including casters , what i found was flying pets annoy me at times with targeting tanking pets like bears are slow but work well , i like cats and prefer them but they do get a lot of damage , the boar has to be my favourite solo pet for below 35 anyway as i prefer a pet that gets to the target fast.

i would get two pets , yes you will need to do extra grinding to keep them to your level but that has a bonus with drops and the extra gold you will have

i have a draenei alt with the clutch-mother now that does look good as well and the white bear would look just as good.

My female draenei runs with 2 creepy pets who both look good at her side (being creepy too) and are both very rare to see on a hunter:

- Level 11 rare (only white skinned in the game) bat from Tirisfal Glades: Ressan the Needler (yes it is ok to get as a level 11-12 hunter, did it without dying which I could not say for my thrash pet I used heheh)

- Level 26 elite boar from RFK: rotting aga'mar (dark-armored boar, only skin in the game)

You can look them up on Petopia. I wanted different pets than others and had my mind on a boar for solo killing and a bat for multiple enemies. Good thing there were unique ones available!

To answer question: your bear will be fine until 70 where you will need every bit of damage you can crank out. And for that, a bear just is not the best pet. Fun is my number one factor though...

How about one of these? It comes in an attractive transparent model. Do your research on it early, though. After level 20, you're looking at a lot of work to level the pet up to you.

Also, at 39, Hayoc is a mighty beast that fills you with pride when you manage to get him. Ugh. I camped for him for HOURS when I wanted to tame him, and run into him all the time on non-hunter alts. Gorgeous pet.

Nobody will complain about those pets.

But if you must have a bear, that's just as fine. You probably won't get any flack at lower levels as long as you don't act like a huntard. Even into Outland, you shouldn't run into too many issues. It's just if/when you get into Heroics, Kara and beyond that you should pick up a ravager, even if it's JUST for raiding.

I thoroughly enjoy running around with my pet crab. No one has given me any trouble about my non "mainstream" pet. A few people even compliment me on my pet choice.

I really don't think anyone cares what kind of pet you choose...so long as you use it properly.

Although some people HATE grouping with hunters that use flying pets...just because it is tough to see around.

Pet choice isn't really a make or break situation until you start doing lvl 70 instances.

Stick with what you want, but I will say that it's possible for you to get a white cat at lvl 16 if you have a horde friend. Echayakee, in barrens, is spawned from a horde quest by the same name.

Actually if you want a white pet and want a cat, you could get one as soon as you get the quest to tame beasts. A little walk to Ironforge will give you a chance to tame a grip of these.

However if you want a bear that's cool however I am kind of similar to Skribs on this. I might not be an "Elitist" so to say but I believe that the bear is just very inferior to the DPS pets. Mainly due to how much I pull off my cat now... I would hate to try to use a bear or a ... turtle (Yes I have finally seen someone with a lvl 67 turtle... largest one I have ever seen, Also a nice white.)

I would recommend the Ghostsaber to anyone who wants a white pet but doesn't want the standard issue cat that you see all the time... at least on my servers. I have only seen 2 or 3 Ghostsaber's at level 70. Most people leave them for a ravager. (Ugly little things)

I also like the rotting agam'ar from RFK. (actually thought about playing my hunter again just so I could level one up.

On my server it is swarming with Ghostsabers.

Near Ironforge there are both white cats (lots of them) and white bears (Mangeclaw level 11 or the rare Bjarn level 12). Just take one of each (the bear for your soloing fun and the cat for the groupings) and you will always be good.

Besides it feels good to have the same pet beside you from around 10 to 70. /smile

I can tell you trying to see around a lvl 60+ turtle is damn near impossible... its shell covers almost anything you are trying to fight. Haven't grouped with someone with a bear but they get pretty big too.

I'm trying to imagine how big level 80 gorillas are going to look in the next expansion, for any hunters who keep them by their sides.

I would go with the suggestion above and go with the white bird, the white bear is slow as hell (class of pet has no movement enhancements) and with a bird you can at least get dive.

I lvled up using bears and eventually went to gorilla's when i was able to start taming them. I never once got any complaints about using them in instances. Alot of the time i was actually asked if i would use them to OT when we didn't have enouch CC for large pulls. As long as you play like a Hunter and not a Huntard no one should say anything about your pet choice. It also helped since i lvled up at a BM hunter and tanked up my ape by giving him all the stam and armor talents, thunder stomp, and used the rest of the points for resistances. I had even gotten whispers about how well my gorilla did.
