DPS: cat vs. moonkinFollow

#1 Jan 31 2008 at 5:25 AM Rating: Decent
Assuming a well-geared (Kararzhan) cat vs. a moderately-geared Moonkin, which spec puts out the most damage?

I have little experience with the balance tree (mostly because my alt is a mage, so, why bother playing another caster) but was curious if Moonkin was super-awesome damage-wise, or on par with cat-form ("pretty good, but no warlock/hunter/rogue")

Can't answer your question, but that quote seems pretty inacurate to me. In my experience anyway, druids lack the little extras such as sheep and sap, but definitely not the fire-power. The cat druids in my guild are doing very well on the damage charts.

I don't know about moonkin personally, but I know my cat form is an awesome damage dealer, last few AB's I've played (11 in last 2 days, alliance can't win for anything) I'm always on top of the charts in terms of killing blows and damage done. I do know last time I played arena against a moonkin, just me and him left, cat form won out :)

As far as I know, the only reason to a kitty do less damage on a raid then an rogue is if he keep popin out from cat to innervate, batlle ress, etc.
Otherwise, the DPS is pretty much the same.
Can't tell about Moonkin, though I assume the same rule for them.

As far as DPS goes, a moonkin can do just as much damage as a mage, warlock, hunter, or kitty druid. Moonkin has a nice advantage in that you do not have to shift from moonkin to caster to do an innervate. You do have to form change for battle ressing but you can still punch the starfire or wrath button while in caster form if mana for the form change is not available. You only lose the extra armor and crit aura. Not all that huge of a loss depending on how far along the fight is.

I have been able to out dps similarly geared dps classes. I will not claim that I am always at the top for any raid I am in but I am in the top third. The only one I have never been able to out dps was a similarly geared rogue. Lets face it they were just built to own the meters when it comes to boss fights.

in kara cat>rogues - from that point on it all goes south. Especially when the rogues starts to get their epixxx...

In my experience (well beyond Kara), mage/warlock/rogue > moonkin > cat. Too much works against the cats, not least of which is Windfury, which is the single biggest raid-DPS booster (rogues benefit, cats don't). Moonkins do more damage, even with their threat problems.

Feral druids don't get invited to raids for cat DPS; they get invited because they're tanks who can DPS in fights that need fewer tanks. Tanks will always be more of a limiting factor than DPS. In a Kara raid where you need whoever you can scrape together, sure, you can probably get some DPS kitties. But in a larger raid where you have a lot of people arguing for limited spots, feral druids get spots because they're tanks.

Until the end of Karazhan, feral druids are pretty close to the top DPS in the game. At the very end of Kara, Mages & Locks pass us. Not long after that and most other classes catch up. We fall behind a little, but i'm pretty sure that 4 rogues & feral druid > 5 rogues. Unfortunately, as stated earlier, 4 rogues + shaman with windfury totem > 4 rogues & feral druid.

All this of course is still dependant on the fight involoved. And if yu have a bear tank and you can just shred away without having to keep mangle up, then you probably will be back much closer to the rogues again.

How about 3 Rogues, 1 Shaman and 1 Feral Druid? Smiley: dubious

How about 1 warriors, 1 shaman, 1 feral druid, and 2 paladins (prot and holy)? Yeah, that was a fun run. For my warrior. Kings + Might + Windfury Totem + Battle Shout + Leader of the Pack. I cried a little.

That's what we usually have, at least when the feral drood isn't tanking. Otherwise we typically stick a hunter in there.
