choosing a classFollow

I currently have a 70 Mage and a soon-to-be 70 Priest, which I leveled for the purpose of exploring the DPS and healing aspects of the game. I would really like to understand the tanking role as well, and so I have decided to start yet another character in the coming weeks. I have already eliminated Druid as a choice simply for appearance preferences, which leaves me with a Paladin or Warrior. I have heard that Paladins are superior multi target tanks, while Warriors are better at holding threat against singular mobs. Basically, my question is this: which should I chose for a tank and why? Any help is appreciated.

Pally was too busy for me. It reminded me of Bard from FFXI. You have to buff all your raid memember (25 people), have to make it the correct buff per class. I like the class a lot, but just too busy for me Smiley: smile

Both will be needed in endgame.

Paladins mainly for healing (we have 3, and all healers), but the time to shine is in ZA going up to eagle boss, they get the birds, I get the front elites, and OT takes the ones from behind. Kara again AoE tanking. I've never seen one MT any of the bosses (holy spec'd that's why), so I don't know how well they hold up on threat and mana.

You have a 70 Priest, if you don't even want a maybe of healing at 70, pick Warrior.

I mainly worry about 1 thing... keeping the boss/mob(s) on me. Not if I need to rebuff group 5, or back up heal for group 2. Just me and <boss here>

I tried Pally a few times. Very strong, very versitile, but not my cup of tea.

i find warrior tanking to be much more interesting, especially at lower lvls. for pallys, i found that until th higher lvls its just spam concecrate and seal of righteousness or w.e its called. also, u might find urself having to heal some pugs. since u already have a priest and are interested in tanking id def go with warrior. theyre great dpsers and fairly easy to lvl, and tanking wile dps specced is fine until almost 70. i also dont find tanking multiple mobs too hard as long as theres no more then 4. with tclap, if everyones attacking ur target, the tclap will most likely hold the others on you.
anyway, my input is bias cuz i love warriors, but i still recommend em :P
hope that helps

I agree with the concept of what jschach is saying, if not necessarily the content.

Paladin tanking is pretty uninteresting for the most part. There's slightly more to do than that, but it's not much. You lay down Consecrate if it's safe, seal up and judge when necessary, and other than that for the most part you just sit back and let auto-attack and the mob do your job for you. Paladins build the majority of their threat from reactive damage when the mobs hit you.

Warriors are compared to Paladin tanking what Priests are compared to Paladin healing. There's just so much more to do even though you're performing essentially the same task. They're not necessarily better and may or may not be easier to play depending on what you're used to, but they are much, much more complex.

If you want more to do, more options, more tools... roll a Warrior. If the Paladin's mechanics appeal to you more, they're perfectly capable of doing the job as well. However, Warriors are most likely to be picked for main-tanking end-game content almost to exclusion, so that might be something to think about.

warrior tanking is a combination of rotating abilities and the game "smash the mole".

Keep shield block, shield slam, and revenge on cooldown.
Keep 5 sunders on the target. (easier now with devastate changes)
Keep demoralizing shout and thunder clam on the target.
Keep commanding shout up.
Use heroic strike when high on rage.

That's pretty much it.

Ok, that made me laugh. Probably because it's true. When we're tanking it's not rocket science I'll admit. Basically all classes are the same tho, but ours & healers kills people if they're not done =)
