It's kinda fun to look back and see how much better we have it now than we used to. Someone on the paladin boards linked this, and I got a kick out of it. Thought it might be an interesting topic for discussion.

I remember when the mage review hit. I remember how much the changes revitalized the class a bit(imagine, if you will, leveling without Evocate, a skill I didn't get until the mid 50s. Which was shortly before the patch with the mage review came out.)

But the trees are worse than I remembered. I mean, 3/3 Imp Flamestrike to have Blastwave? Ouch.

A couple examples of suckage that I noticed:

Combustion only gives one crit, rather than 3

Imp. scorch increases scorch damage, but doesn't stack to give increased fire damage

5 points in wand specialization FTW!

Wooow. We sucked.

Nice of you to bring this up, since I didn't level a Mage any much except from when I was a Hordie and had this level 26 Troll Mage specced frost, which I can't remember much of.

I have NO idea why I went Alliance. Today I really regret it.

Actually, the old Combustion wasn't bad, just not as good as now. Whenever the 5-minute cooldown was up, you'd use it right before a Pyroblast for a guaranteed Pyroblast crit. This was during the time when Pyroblast itself had a one-minute cooldown.

And the worst thing that happened for a fire mage is when a mob resisted your Combustion'd Pyroblast. Waste of a five-minute cooldown. D:

Indeed. Just imagine how interesting it will be two years down the road to look at the trees as they are now. We'll be asking ourselves: "How the hell did we get by with ****** trees like that?"

At least that's the hope, because that means the future looks bright.

LOL Memories...

Anyways this was back when I leveled with Arcane because Burning Soul didn't match up to IAMS, Instant Arcane Explosion/Evocation weren't freebees, and Ice Crit was a total joke even with talents.

Funny how even if it had the EXACT same talentset good talents would be totally different just from escalation of gear and stats.

Too bad the Imped Frost/Fire Wards got the shaft.

The creepy thing is (from a pseudo-nooby Warlock perspective) a lot of those talents we have there still exist in a lesser form. All the Improved Pet spells, for one thing, have been something like halved between now and then. Master Conjuror also looks like a possible helpful talent (stacks better than the current version).

This is all about the Warlock trees, BTW.

I love the fact that Eagle Eye used to be a 25-pointer in Marksmanship, and Hunters (gasp) had what looks like a vaguely viable melee tree.

Ahh, the good old days. I had, strangely enough, leveled my mage as Arcane way back in the day, so evocate was already there, but I tended to run out of mana pretty quickly and often had to wand mobs to death. Imagine wands not having the ability to auto-shoot. Now THAT sucked.

The mage review was pretty insane. Elemental specs became popular, the 11 point Arcane mandatory raid build became obsolete, and Deep Fire became just fugly good.

Now if only they'd put Ice Lance back to the way it was...

Woah, I haven't been fire in so long... I though it still only gave 1 crit.

Good old memories. As I started out with my mage long time ago, I do remember arcane explosion having as casting time and not being an instant. Unless specced far enough arcane it was the most useless aoe spell ever.

And that useless flamstrike you needed to get to blastwave indeed! Hmm though at the time as a newbie mage, I thought that 15% more crit on an AOE like flamestrike was awesome. I got it ran out and used it as a puller and did not understand why I died that much by those swarms of angry mobs that the tank just could not get of me.........

Sigh, those days when I was a young mage with sooo much to learn..

Heh, reminds me of the old PVP days when there was a nightly Alliance raid on Org, and Horde would hold the Alliance in the entrance tunnel. I'd hide in a corner and wait for them to get close enough and throw a flamestrike out into the mass of Alliance. With Imp FS I was dropping people left and right. Fun times....

I remeber the mage review at the same time as the Scourge invasion. Aoeing down the waves. Burning through the elite shades with a priest spam shackling it. Unloading a triple loaded combustion in a badly geared Warlock's face.

Good times.

If you think the old mage talents are ******, non-logical, unsynergized talents, you should look at the Paladin's. Could not be worse.

This game has evolved a lot in the ways of talents and as they are at the moment they aren't too shabby (in contrary of the starting ones). It took a few years though! (and an expansion)
