Leveling as Disc/HolyFollow

I remember back in the days, when Holy Fire had just been introduced, a new fad arose, the Holy Fire/Smite crit build. A video of a decked out Priest throwing about heavy Holy Fire crits, etc. brough the attention of the Priest community back then.

I'm curious if Discipline/Holy is a viable leveling build. Shadow is fine, but I feel kinda vulnerable. I can't heal and have to rely on Vampiric Embrace and Power Word: Shield to keep me going.

Or perhaps I just need to get myself a bit more Outland gear before I start QQ'ing about Shadow's survivability.

What say ye?

I level as Disc/Holy. It's a fine, safe, reliable leveling build that retains healing capabilities far beyond Shadow's. (I've done both.)

There are two basic ways to do it: 23 Discipline, then put points in Holy for Searing Light and Spiritual Guidance; or go all the way to Force of Will, Reflective Shield, and maybe PS, then Holy with what's left.

I leveled 1 to 70 as disc/holy. Bring a lot of water and a little patience.

I was thinking of something along the lines of this.

Not sure if getting Spirit Tap and Wand Specialization is better, though. Could use the mana regen from Spirit Tap, but I'm not sure how much I'll be wanding. I wand a lot with my Shadow build.

Both spirit tap and wand specialization are good for leveling. Actually.. you could put both as the first 10 talent points.

If you don't want to wand, Spirit Tap is a must along with Meditation. With a good amount of Spirit you'll benefit a lot from both talents. If you wand then you don't need Spirit Tap, Meditation is enough.

I think a good way to spend talents points is to start with Disc until you got 3/3 Meditation. Then go in the Holy tree until you got 5/5 Divine Fury. After that go Disc or Holy, it depends on your preferences.

I say ol' chap, what's the trouble with shadow?

I've never had any issues with shadow.

My current problem with Shadow is that if I pull more than two mobs, my survivability drops like a rock. And in PvP I feel defenseless when I have someone beating on me.

Mind Flay and Power Word: Shield just isn't powerful enough. I was ambushed by a level 60 Rogue (my Priest is level 60 as well) in Hellfire Peninsula and he took down my Shield in a matter or seconds, before I could get off a Vampiric Touch and Mind Blast. He was wearing Azeroth blues, I recognized the Phytoskin Spaulders, Ebon Mask and a Krol Blade.

I made a calculative mistake and shifted out of Shadowform to heal up at way too low health and the added 15% physical damage sent me into the spirit world on express delivery.

Damn Rogues.

I just feel like not being in Shadowform gives me a lot of advantages, such as healing. Well, I guess healing is the only advantage. Still a pretty big advantage if you need it.

But as I mentioned, perhaps I just need more Outland gear. I'm currently only wearing a few pieces, but I'm picking up new gear after almost every quest.

There are definitely more and better PvP talents in the Disc/Holy trees than in the Shadow tree. Shadow you got Silence... no doubt it's awesome but it's limited to casters. Blackout is not reliable, 10% proc is not enough.

In the Disc/Holy trees there are simply too many PvP talents to enumerate them. It's obviously more PvP oriented than Shadow.

That's not a great example. Rogues pretty much eat our face in any situation. We fare much better against other classes.

Totally true, although Blessed Resilience is probably the best talent a Priest can have against them. Unbreakable Will is also great against rogues because it helps with gouge (stun resist).

It's just that in Shadowform I can use Mind Blast and.. Mind Blast (Shadow Word: Death in two or three levels). Mind Flay is pretty much useless if the person is aware of my presence.

Smite, Holy Fire, Holy Nova, Surge of Light, Reflective Shield, Power Infusion and Pain Suppression. Once I hit 70 I'm going to go with a Disc/Holy build. Don't know if it'll be a Spirit of Redemption or Pain Suppression build yet. Maybe a Pain Suppression build and then finding a bodyguard to stay behind.

Either 43/18/0 or a 24/37/0 build. Don't really know which would be better. Depends on the situation, I guess.

I've found that survivability with Shadow is definitely different in multi-mob encounters. It requires more mobility and more of an offensive mentality. As for a Disc/Holy build, Wand Spec is a good buy for sure, because you'll do a lot of wanding. In fact, it's the only piece of gear a priest _really_ cares about while leveling. Your next goal should be to get Force of Will, which is quite nice in a build like this.

In situations where you can't pull more mobs by fearing, do use Scream rank 1. Example: elemental plateau.

There's one big problem there that spriests don't have to deal with: if one of your main spells gets kicked, you're locked out of all your healing spells for far too long. It's even worse if you go up against a mage; if I get locked out of my main spells as shadow, that gives me a free trip to heal myself to full.

The biggest part of being a shadow priest is knowing at what point you should drop out and heal, and at what point you should just keep damaging.

And on a side note, Mind Flay is *incredibly* useful against rogues. You should constantly have Martyrdom, and as a result zero interruptions and zero facing problems.

Martyrdom and Mind Flay is godlike together, but a well-placed Kick to my holy groin and I'm spent. Smiley: tongue
