I have a level 43 Mage alt that will take a bit to hit 70 and I wanted to prepare what I really "need".

Basic Question: Is the Frozen Shadoweave set really worth it compared to S1 rewards which are time investments instead of gold?

The FSW set is for PvE and the S1 set is for PvP. Go for whichever you think you will want more, although the spellfire set is better for PvE (assuming you will raid and want top/better dps)

Ofcourse listen to Anobix first, but just to add, until you have the mats/skill, then by all means use the s1 if you can acquire it. My guild encourages people to pvp when not raiding to fill in the gear until they can replace it with good PVE gear. FSW and Spellfire set with the Spellstrike set will last you a long, long time.

You should get the non-set silk epics, and the season one weapon, if you add the spellfire and spellstrike set, that's SSC-able right there.
I did more or less the same, and I don't think I've ever come in second dps-wise, besides the times I died of course.

Get tailoring at 70 though, and get a gathering profession till then. You'll make more money then you have to spend on tailoring, since you can just aoe through some instances till about 250 tailoring.

I wouldn't get shadoweave myself, since frost isn't as good in pve as fire, and both sets are horrible for pvp.

If you don't want to do tailoring, you could get some S1 with kara epics, it's mainly the chest piece and shoulders that are hard to get in kara, the rest not so much.

Tailoring is worth it, and grinding cash won't take more time then AVing for your S1 items will. Tailoring will render you broke though.

In short:
If you want max damage ASAP, get tailoring for the spellfire and spellstrike sets.
If you want to be able to raid, but have no need to do as much damage as possible, forget about tailoring and go av more.
Either will do fine for kara, tailoring gear will last you a lot longer though.
